The Dragon Ball Project

Era 1996–1997; shut down as Viz US publication arrived
Medium Scanlation
Status Strictly Honored

Profile

An early collaborative Dragon Ball fanscan/fan-lettering project documented on the web by 1996. The surviving project page was created by Smurfbob and explicitly credits Jason Doyama as the translator. The maintainer describes scanning Japanese Dragon Ball graphic novels into a computer, obtaining Doyama's translation, and putting the English directly onto the page. When Viz announced US Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z publication, the project announced that it was dead and that it would stop fan lettering the series. This is a real pre-standardization manga-fan-translation project, but the surviving evidence does not support the older pre-1992 Usenet/FTP date previously stored here.

Signature style

Surviving project page calls the process fan lettering: physical Japanese Dragon Ball books were scanned, Jason Doyama supplied translations, and English text was placed directly onto the pages. The page itself was created by Smurfbob.
