How We Preserve Anime History
Sourced, then structured.
What this site is doing
AnimeHistory.org documents how anime reached the West before streaming made it easy: fansub groups, VHS traders, IRC channels, BitTorrent crews, scanlation houses, credit cards, stand-downs, and the messy paper trail they left behind.
That history is fragile. Sites rot. Forums vanish. Wayback captures are incomplete. Someone has to go find the evidence, read it, and write it down where people can still reach it.
How the research works
The webmaster personally digs for sources before anything becomes public lore:
- Old fansub and group websites
- Wayback Machine snapshots
- AniDB and other release directories
- Collector / VHS trade lists
- Usenet posts, forum threads, LiveJournal-era notes
- Original scripts, credit cards, and contemporary reporting when they survive
Those materials are the foundation. The published card is a structured summary of what those sources support — not a vibes essay generated from a show title.
Where AI fits
AI is a research assistant here, not the historian of record. It helps with:
- Finding leads and alternate spellings of group names
- Comparing overlapping evidence across dumps and archives
- Organizing notes and maintaining research logs
- Drafting readable structure once sources are in hand
The webmaster verifies important claims, challenges mistakes, rejects thin sourcing,
and makes the final editorial call. Soft or disputed claims stay marked
[UNCONFIRMED] on the public page.
Trust the sourcing, but verify. Tools can accelerate the work. They do not replace the work.
What you see on Lore cards
Public Fansub & Scanlation History entries stay readable on purpose. When a card rests on a concrete historical source, a small citation appears under it — a short label linking to the original page or archive capture.
Internal research ledgers, screenshot dumps, and assistant chat logs stay internal. The anime history stays the star. The evidence stays credited.
