The October Update.

October was supposed to be the quiet month! 🍂

After months of building episode guides, writing Lore, tracking down fansub history, and capturing 866,000+ anime screencaps, I said October would be about the little things. Quality-of-life improvements, layout adjustments, and making the archive a little nicer to use.

Well... one thing led to another. 😅

What started as a few improvements turned into a pretty substantial refresh of AnimeHistory's member experience, along with some long-overdue improvements to our character tagging and image search.

THE LIVING ARCHIVE GETS SOCIAL //

The member area has been given a serious makeover. Not just prettier boxes and buttons, either. We've been working on making AnimeHistory feel more like a place where fans can actually hang out, share things, and get to know each other.

The Hub is now the social heart of AnimeHistory. Members can post shouts with our BBCode editor, share stickers and images, react to posts, and switch between Community and Following feeds. Whether you're keeping up with a few friends or seeing what everyone is sharing, there's now a proper home for it.

My Archive has become a personal collection of the anime you follow. New episode-guide improvements, Lore additions, gallery milestones, and other meaningful changes can appear as archive updates. You can see what's new, open the details, and revisit the recorded history later. No mailing lists, no automated emails. The updates stay right here where they belong.

MyPage (Overview) is still your own little corner of the internet, just much better organized. Show off your favorite anime, share your public jukebox playlists, display your forum signature, revisit old avatars, feature a favorite article or forum topic, and let visitors see what you've been up to. Other members can even load your public playlists directly into the site's jukebox. 🎵

Member Galleries have also received a refresh. Bigger thumbnail navigation, a more comfortable image viewer, cleaner comments, and compact image details make browsing member uploads much more enjoyable. Character tags, member mentions, stickers, and reactions are still part of the fun.

And finally...

Private Messages! ✉️

Messages now support proper conversations, keeping new replies together instead of scattering them throughout your Inbox and Sent folders. We've added message search, non-destructive archiving, clearer read receipts, and the ability to edit a sent message until the recipient reads it.

Because sometimes you hit Send and immediately think, "Maybe I could've worded that better." 😂

CHARACTER TAGGING & IMAGE SEARCH //

This is another improvement I'm particularly happy about.

When tagging a gallery image, the available characters are now tied to the anime series associated with that image. That means you're choosing from relevant characters instead of searching through the entire archive.

We're also making room for minor characters who don't yet have full biographies. They can still be identified and preserved in the gallery's character records, with the possibility of receiving proper profiles down the road.

Not every character needs a five-paragraph biography to deserve being remembered!

And character-based image search has been strengthened, too.

Search for Naruto, and you can discover images tagged with Naruto. As more screencaps receive character tags, the gallery becomes more useful for finding specific characters across their appearances.

With hundreds of thousands of images already in the archive, this is one of those small improvements that could become something pretty special over time.

STILL THE SAME ANIMEHISTORY //

Underneath all these changes, the idea hasn't changed.

AnimeHistory is still a fan-built home for the anime we grew up with, the fansub groups that helped us discover them, and the strange, wonderful little communities that made the old internet so much fun.

No algorithms deciding what you should see. No automated marketing emails. No endless engagement games.

Just anime, history, screencaps, music, conversations, and people who enjoy them.

There's still polishing to do, and I'm sure I'll find another dozen things I want to adjust tomorrow. That's usually how this goes.

But for now, I hope you'll take a look around the updated member area. Follow an anime, explore someone's profile, leave a shout, tag a character, or introduce yourself in the forums.

The archive is alive, and there's plenty of room for more fans to make themselves at home. 💙

Happy October, everyone!
