FLCL: The Anime That Cannot Be Explained

You cannot explain FLCL.

You can try. You can talk about growing up, about things happening too fast, about Canti and Mamimi and the robot that comes out of a kids head when a woman hits him with a bass guitar.

But explaining it misses the point.

FLCL has to be experienced at the right age, at the right time, when you are just confused enough about the world to let it wash over you.

Some of us were lucky enough to experience it that way.

The Internet Before the Algorithm

The internet used to be scary in the right way.

You did not know what you would find. You followed links. You got lost. You ended up on a fansite about a show you had never heard of, stayed for three hours reading someone elses passion, and left knowing something you did not know before.

That is gone now.

The algorithm decides what you find. The feed shows you what it thinks you want. The rabbit hole has been paved over and turned into a highway.

AnimeHistory.org is a rabbit hole. Come get lost.

Geocities and the First Anime Fansites

It started with Geocities.

Free hosting. WYSIWYG editor. Animated GIFs. Terrible color schemes. Midi files playing automatically.

And fans building shrines to their favorite anime characters with everything they had.

No monetization. No SEO strategy. No content calendar. Just love.

Those sites were the foundation of everything. This site exists because of them.

What We Owe the Fansubbers

We owe them everything.

Every fan who discovered anime through a fansub owes those anonymous translators, timers, encoders and distributors a debt that can never be repaid.

They worked for free. They got no credit. Many of them got sued.

And the culture they built became a billion dollar industry that forgot they existed.

AnimeHistory.org remembers.

The Shoutbox: A Love Letter

The shoutbox was not efficient.

It was not threaded. It did not have reactions. You could not quote someone from three days ago. Half the conversations made no sense without context.

But it was alive.

You opened a fansite and there were people there, right now, talking about the episode that just came out, arguing about power levels, welcoming new members.

AnimeHistory.org has a shoutbox. Bottom right corner. Say hello.
