Runs a small convenience store in Karakura Town. Hat, fan, wooden sandals, the specific affect of someone who has decided that appearing harmless is more useful than appearing dangerous. Former captain of Squad 12, inventor of several things that should not exist, exiled from Soul Society under circumstances the show revisits with increasing complexity. Urahara knows more about what is happening and why than he tells anyone at any point in the series, and he tells them exactly as much as he has decided they need. The most consequential person in Bleach who is technically never in charge of anything.

The Past arc rewinds Soul Society far enough to show familiar adults occupying completely different positions. Urahara becomes captain of the Twelfth Division, Hiyori is his suspicious lieutenant, and the institution that later exiles him still looks intact. The flashback matters because it turns Urahara from mysterious mentor into somebody who was once inside the system Aizen eventually exploited.
Episodes 208–212 · Aizen's Secret Maneuvers
Aizen experiments on captains and lieutenants decades before his public betrayal, forcing Hollowfication onto the people who will become the Visored. Urahara tries to save them and is blamed instead, while Yoruichi helps him escape. The flashback changes the scale of Aizen's plan: the Soul Society arc was not the beginning. It was simply the moment he finally stopped hiding.
