Details & Synopsis
The original Full Metal Panic balanced its military thriller against high school comedy with a precision that should not have worked and did. The Second Raid removes the balance. The comedy is almost entirely gone. What remains is the military thriller, and something underneath it that the first series was too busy juggling tones to fully surface.

Produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto, The Second Raid aired on TBS in 2005. Thirteen episodes. KyoAni were not yet the studio everyone knew them as, this predates Haruhi, predates Lucky Star, predates the reputation. What it represents is the studio at the peak of their action animation capability, before they pivoted to the aesthetic that would define their next decade. The Arm Slave combat sequences are as good as the genre produced in the mid-2000s.

The story picks up with the Amalgam organization moving from background threat to primary antagonist. Sousuke Sagara continues his impossible double life, MITHRIL special forces operative and Kaname Chidori's bodyguard-slash-classmate, until MITHRIL pulls him off the protection detail. What follows is the series' actual subject: what happens to a soldier trained since childhood for violence and nothing else when the one assignment that gave his life adjacent-to-human context is removed. Sousuke does not handle it gracefully. Sousuke does not handle it at all.

Gates is the antagonist the series deploys against this. Unhinged in a register the franchise had not previously attempted, not calculating, not ideological, simply a man who has found war and found that he likes it, enthusiastically, in a way that makes everyone around him deeply uncomfortable including his own allies. He is one of the more genuinely unsettling villain performances of the era.

Kaname alone and aware she is unprotected. Al, the Lambda Driver AI in the Arbalest, developing something that functions like concern. Tessa Testarossa carrying command weight that the first series kept at the level of character detail. The Second Raid is not a larger story than its predecessor. It is a narrower one, focused tighter on what the original was too busy to examine. Thirteen episodes and it earns every one of them.

A one-episode OVA, The Second Raid: "Another", was released with the DVD. Kaname in the bath, framed as comedy, functioning as something considerably more uncomfortable. Watch it after the series.

Primary Protagonist / Mithril Sergeant and Arbalest Pilot

The Second Raid begins with Sosuke trying to maintain the impossible balance he built in the first series: Mithril soldier, Jindai student and Kaname's hidden bodyguard all at once. That balance collapses when Mithril orders him to stop protecting Kaname and return to operations full time. Sosuke obeys, but the decision leaves him distracted, angry and increasingly unable to use the Arbalest's Lambda Driver properly. Clouseau's criticism hits because it exposes a problem Sosuke cannot solve with more training: he does not trust the machine, the order or himself. His disappearance also hurts Kaname in a way he failed to anticipate. The Hong Kong crisis forces Sosuke to decide what he is fighting for rather than simply waiting for another superior to define the mission.

Primary Protagonist / Whispered Student

Kaname spends much of The Second Raid discovering what Sosuke's protection had been shielding her from. When Mithril abruptly removes him from the assignment, she is left with an unseen agent named Wraith and no explanation for why Sosuke vanished. Instead of accepting that isolation, Kaname notices the surveillance around her, confronts Wraith and then survives Xia Yu Lan's attempt to kill her largely through nerve and improvisation. The experience makes her fear real without making her helpless. Leonard Testarossa's appearance also introduces a new threat tied directly to her status as a Whispered. Kaname's anger at Sosuke comes from more than romance. She trusted him to tell her when the rules changed, and his silence makes the military world around him feel more dangerous than ever.

Major Supporting / Mithril Captain and Whispered

Tessa remains captain of the Tuatha de Danaan, but The Second Raid puts her in the uncomfortable position of carrying out decisions she does not personally support. Mithril's intelligence network has been compromised, Amalgam is moving more openly and command decides that Sosuke can no longer divide his attention between Kaname and the Arbalest. Tessa signs the order recalling him, even though she knows exactly what it will do to both Sosuke and Kaname. That choice captures the tension at the center of her role: she is their friend, a Whispered teenager and a commanding officer responsible for far more people than either of them. Her conflict with Leonard also becomes more immediate as her twin brother emerges as one of Amalgam's most dangerous figures.

Supporting / Mithril SRT Officer and Arm Slave Pilot

Mao remains one of Mithril's most dependable Special Response Team pilots and the person most capable of recognizing when Sosuke's problems are no longer tactical. She works beside Kurz and the newly arrived Clouseau as Amalgam begins testing Mithril's weaknesses, first in combat operations and later through the deliberate chaos in Hong Kong. Mao can be blunt with Sosuke because she knows what he is capable of when focused, which also means she notices how badly the recall from Kaname is affecting him. She does not have Tessa's authority or Kaname's emotional place in his life, but she occupies a valuable middle ground: teammate, senior soldier and friend. When the organization begins cracking under pressure, Mao is one of the people still trying to keep the unit itself intact.

Supporting / Mithril Sniper and Arm Slave Pilot

Kurz brings the same joking confidence into The Second Raid, but the darker situation gives his competence more room to show. He remains Mithril's best long-range specialist and one of the SRT pilots deployed as Amalgam begins countering Mithril's technology and operations. Kurz is often the teammate who can talk to Sosuke without turning the conversation into an order, even if his advice arrives wrapped in jokes Sosuke barely understands. During the Hong Kong operation, that steadiness matters as the team searches for the rogue Arm Slave creating chaos in the city. Kurz never stops being the flirt and smart-mouth of the unit, but The Second Raid makes clear that the humor is attached to a professional soldier who can be trusted when the situation becomes genuinely ugly.

Major Supporting / Mithril SRT Commander and Falke Pilot

Belfangan Clouseau joins Mithril's Special Response Team as its new commander and immediately becomes one of the few pilots willing to challenge Sosuke directly. In a training match, Clouseau defeats the Arbalest with his M9D Falke even though Sosuke has access to the Lambda Driver. The lesson is not that the Arbalest is weak. It is that Sosuke's distrust of the machine is preventing him from using what it can actually do. Clouseau is strict, confident and much less interested in Sosuke's reputation than in the quality of the soldier standing in front of him. That makes him frustrating and useful in equal measure. The Second Raid uses him as proof that Sosuke's next step cannot come from simply becoming faster or more heavily armed.

Gates

SPOILER!

Primary Antagonist / Amalgam Execution Squad Commander

Gates is an Amalgam officer created for The Second Raid and one of the series' most openly unstable villains. He commands an execution squad equipped with Codarl Arm Slaves and treats both enemies and subordinates with the same casual cruelty whenever his mood shifts. The absurdity of his behavior does not make him harmless. Gates is capable of reading a battlefield, recognizing Mithril tactics and using civilians or local conflicts as cover for Amalgam operations. His violence becomes especially visible around the Xia sisters, whose refusal to follow Amalgam's orders turns them from assets into targets. Gates ultimately confronts Sosuke in Hong Kong, where the Arbalest's restored Lambda Driver overwhelms his Codarl. For once, Sosuke's control is stronger than the chaos an enemy is trying to impose on him.

Major Antagonist / Amalgam Executive and Whispered

Leonard Testarossa is Tessa's twin brother, a Whispered prodigy and a senior figure within Amalgam. Where Tessa uses Black Technology inside an organization that at least claims to limit its power, Leonard moves through a group willing to exploit that knowledge without the same restraint. He enters Kaname's life directly after Xia Yu Lan's failed attack, arriving with miniature Alastor machines and demonstrating that he can reach her even after she has outmaneuvered her immediate pursuer. Leonard is calm, polite and unsettlingly certain of his own position, a very different kind of threat from Gates or Gauron. His connection to Tessa also makes Amalgam personal for Mithril in a way an anonymous rival organization would not be.

Xia Yu Lan

SPOILER!

Antagonist / Assassin and Yu Fan's Twin

Xia Yu Lan is one of the twin sisters trained under Gauron and used as assassins during the crisis surrounding Amalgam. She is sent to Tokyo after Sosuke has been removed from Kaname's protection, turning what looked like a quiet surveillance assignment into a direct attempt on Kaname's life. Yu Lan is fast, disciplined and frighteningly willing to kill at close range, but Kaname's refusal to panic lets the supposedly protected civilian turn the pursuit against her. Wraith is wounded, Kaname escapes and Yu Lan is eventually confronted by Leonard Testarossa's Alastor machines. Her death makes clear that the sisters are not simply loyal Amalgam operatives. They are following the legacy of their own teacher and have become expendable to the organization around them.

Xia Yu Fan

SPOILER!

Antagonist / Arm Slave Pilot and Yu Lan's Twin

Xia Yu Fan is Yu Lan's twin sister and the more visible Arm Slave threat in the second half of The Second Raid. After her sister's death, Yu Fan rejects Amalgam's attempts to control the situation and carries out Gauron's plan in Hong Kong, using a Shadow Arm Slave to create destruction that will draw Sosuke toward him. Her actions are driven by loyalty to her sister and teacher rather than any belief in Amalgam's larger goals. That distinction matters because Gates wants her eliminated almost as much as Mithril wants the crisis stopped. Yu Fan's rampage turns Hong Kong into the place where Sosuke's military obligations, guilt over Kaname and history with Gauron all collide at once.

Gauron

SPOILER!

Major Antagonist / Sosuke's Former Enemy and Manipulator

Gauron survives the events of the first series, but by The Second Raid his body is ruined and his role has changed. He no longer needs to beat Sosuke in an Arm Slave to hurt him. From hiding in Hong Kong, Gauron uses the Xia sisters and coded messages to pull Sosuke away from Mithril's operation and into one final private confrontation. He knows exactly where Sosuke is emotionally weakest and uses Kaname's absence, the military recall and Sosuke's uncertainty about the Arbalest to make him question whether anything in his life can be trusted. Gauron's physical condition means the meeting cannot become the kind of battle they once had. Instead, his last weapon is information and cruelty, an attempt to leave Sosuke psychologically broken even after Gauron himself is gone.

Al

Supporting / ARX-7 Arbalest AI

Al's relationship with Sosuke becomes central in The Second Raid because the Arbalest's Lambda Driver only works when the pilot can align intent, confidence and imagination strongly enough to use it. Sosuke blames the machine whenever that connection fails, while Al keeps asking questions that sound increasingly less like diagnostic software and more like a partner trying to understand him. Clouseau's training match exposes the problem clearly: Sosuke does not trust the Arbalest, and therefore does not trust Al either. After the crisis with Kaname and Gauron forces Sosuke to reconsider what he wants, he finally stops treating the machine as defective equipment. The change is visible immediately. Al responds, the Lambda Driver works and the Arbalest becomes an extension of Sosuke rather than something he is fighting against.

Wraith

SPOILER!

Major Supporting / Mithril Intelligence Agent and Kaname's Bodyguard

Wraith is a Mithril Intelligence agent assigned to protect Kaname after Sosuke is removed from the job. Unlike Sosuke, Wraith works almost entirely through surveillance and disguise, which initially leaves Kaname feeling as though her new bodyguard barely exists. Kaname eventually notices the surveillance around her and forces a confrontation, only for Xia Yu Lan to attack before Wraith can give her the answers she wants. Wraith's failure to prevent that ambush also exposes the growing divide between Mithril's Intelligence and Operations branches. The Second Raid uses Wraith to show Kaname exactly what Sosuke had been doing for her all along: protection is much easier to ignore until the person you trusted to provide it suddenly disappears.

Supporting / Mithril Operations Commander

Andrei Kalinin remains one of the senior Mithril officers who understands Sosuke as both a soldier and a person shaped by years of war. The Second Raid places him inside an organization increasingly unsure of its own intelligence as Amalgam begins exploiting information Mithril believed was secure. Kalinin is part of the command structure responsible for keeping the Special Response Team operating while Sosuke's concentration and confidence deteriorate. He rarely approaches Sosuke with the emotional directness of Kaname or Mao, but his long familiarity with him gives Kalinin a clearer understanding than most officers of how dangerous it is when Sosuke starts losing faith in his own judgement.

Supporting / Tuatha de Danaan Executive Officer

Richard Mardukas serves as the experienced executive officer beside Tessa aboard the Tuatha de Danaan. His rigid professionalism provides a useful counterweight to a captain who is brilliant but still very young, especially as Mithril begins confronting evidence that its own organization has been compromised. Mardukas does not drive the personal conflicts surrounding Sosuke and Kaname, but he helps make the military side of The Second Raid believable. Tessa may command the submarine, yet she does so with veteran officers like Mardukas maintaining the discipline and structure around her.

Supporting / Kaname's Friend and Jindai Student

Kyoko Tokiwa remains one of Kaname's closest friends at Jindai High and part of the ordinary school life Kaname is trying to hold onto while Mithril and Amalgam close in around her. Her presence becomes especially important after Sosuke disappears from school. Kyoko does not know the military reason behind his absence, which means Kaname has nobody in her normal life who can explain what has happened. The contrast is simple but effective: to Kyoko, Sosuke is the strange classmate who has stopped showing up. To Kaname, his disappearance means the one person she trusted to protect her may be gone without explanation.

Supporting / Jindai Student and Sosuke's Friend

Shinji Kazama remains one of the few Jindai students who genuinely enjoys Sosuke's obsession with military hardware instead of simply finding it alarming. In The Second Raid, Shinji belongs to the school life Sosuke is gradually being pulled away from as Mithril demands more of his time and eventually removes him from Kaname's protection altogether. He has no idea how serious the military side of Sosuke's life has become, but that is exactly why he matters. Shinji represents one of the ordinary friendships Sosuke has somehow managed to build without fully realizing how important that civilian life has become to him.
