Details & Synopsis
Saya Otonashi lives in Okinawa with an adoptive family, no memory of her past, and a medical condition nobody can explain to her. Then a creature attacks her school, a cellist named Hagi hands her a sword, and her body remembers exactly what to do before her mind catches up.
Blood+ took the basic image from Blood: The Last Vampire, a girl with a katana hunting Chiropterans, and turned it into a fifty-episode family tragedy that moved from Okinawa to Vietnam, Russia, France, England, and New York. It aired for a full year beginning in 2005, which gave it room to be slower than people expected. That pace is the point. Saya is not collecting monsters of the week. She is recovering a life that was taken from her in pieces, and every answer makes the family around her more complicated.
Adult Swim brought it west in 2007, where it became one of those shows people either followed every week or lost completely after missing three episodes. The opening themes changed, the locations changed, the conspiracy kept widening, and Hagi remained Hagi.
Do not confuse it with Blood-C. Same name, different wound. Blood+ is the one that takes its time.

The Schiff & the Third Side
Built as Weapons, Escaped as People
The Schiff Enter as a Third Side
SPOILER!The Schiff do not arrive as Red Shield allies or as Diva's loyal soldiers. They are escaped artificial Chiropterans trying to solve the fact that their own bodies are killing them.
Why it matters
Their existence breaks the neat two-sided map of the series. There are now people created by Diva's system who do not consider Diva their Queen and have no reason to trust Saya either.
They Were Built as Soldiers and Escaped as People
SPOILER!The project that creates the Schiff is interested in useful bodies: speed, strength, weapons and obedience.
The Schiff themselves want time, freedom and some control over how their short lives end.
The Schiff themselves want time, freedom and some control over how their short lives end.
Why it matters
Blood+ uses the gap between those two descriptions to turn a weapons program into a story about people the program never intended to recognize as people.
The Thorn Makes Every Schiff Decision Urgent
SPOILER!The Thorn begins as a mark and spreads until the afflicted Schiff crystallizes and dies.
There is no stable adulthood waiting for them if they simply hide long enough.
There is no stable adulthood waiting for them if they simply hide long enough.
Why it matters
Their desperation is not abstract. Every alliance, attack and mistake happens under a clock they can see appearing on one another's bodies.
Sunlight Makes Freedom Physically Dangerous
SPOILER!The Schiff cannot safely live in direct sunlight, forcing them into night travel, covered spaces and abandoned buildings even after they escape the laboratory.
Why it matters
Leaving captivity does not give them an ordinary world to enter. Their bodies carry the experiment with them everywhere.
What They Choose With the Time They Have
Survival Stops Being the Only Question
Saya's Blood Does Not Save Irene
SPOILER!The Schiff pursue Saya because they have been led to believe her blood may cure the Thorn.
When Irene drinks Saya's blood, it kills her instead.
When Irene drinks Saya's blood, it kills her instead.
What changed
The group loses both a friend and the explanation they were using to justify hunting Saya. Their survival plan has to become something more complicated than finding the correct Queen and taking what they need.
Moses and Karman Carry the Same Experiment Differently
SPOILER!Moses and Karman survive the same manufactured existence without becoming the same person.
Moses tends toward restraint and exhausted dignity. Karman carries more visible anger at what was done to them and at how little future they were given.
Moses tends toward restraint and exhausted dignity. Karman carries more visible anger at what was done to them and at how little future they were given.
Why it matters
Blood+ does not let "the Schiff" erase the individual people inside the group.
The Alliance With Saya Is Earned, Not Automatic
SPOILER!After learning that Saya is not their cure and seeing the larger machinery that created them, the surviving Schiff gradually align with Saya's side.
What changed
They do not join because she is a Queen. They join because their interests, experiences and choices finally point toward the same enemy.
Corpse Corps Proves the Experiment Never Needed the Schiff to Survive
SPOILER!Cinq Flèches follows the Schiff project with Corpse Corps soldiers engineered for the same war.
Why it matters
The replacement makes the cruelty of the original project clearer. The institution does not mourn failed subjects. It iterates on the weapon.
The Schiff End as People, Not Failed Weapons
SPOILER!By the final campaign, the surviving Schiff are making choices about whom to protect and what kind of end they are willing to accept.
What changed
Their story no longer belongs to the laboratory that made them. However short their lives are, the last part of those lives is theirs.
