Details & Synopsis
Before Naruto. Before Bleach. Before the Big Three had a name. There was Dragon Ball Z, and for an entire generation of Western kids in the 1990s, Dragon Ball Z was simply anime. The category and the example were the same thing.

Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Daisuke Nishio, Dragon Ball Z aired on Fuji TV from 1989 to 1996, 291 episodes following the adult Goku and his allies across four escalating sagas: the Saiyan invasion, Frieza on Namek, the androids and Cell, and the decade-spanning weight of Majin Buu. Akira Toriyama's power scaling, once a comedy mechanic in the original Dragon Ball, became mythology here. Transformations as revelation. The Super Saiyan moment. Gohan vs. Cell in a fight still being argued about. The power level debate started here, and it has never actually ended.

In the West the story gets more complicated, and more interesting. Ocean Productions dubbed it first, a version truncated, edited, scored by Bruce Faulconer's electric guitar-driven replacement soundtrack that an entire generation now considers inseparable from the show itself. Cartoon Network ran it in syndication. Toonami ran it in the afternoon slot that trained a demographic to expect anime at 4pm. Kids who had never heard the word fansub knew every Kamehameha, every Spirit Bomb, every moment of dead air in a Frieza fight that took four episodes to cover forty five seconds.

Funimation eventually acquired full rights and started over: the uncut version, the original Kikuchi score, the complete run. Then came Dragon Ball Z Kai, the remaster that trimmed the series to its canonical bones, cutting the extended powering up sequences that had always been the show's most honest flaw.

The Seed of Might project sits apart from all of it. 291 episodes, fully color and audio graded, built as a preservation effort rather than a rebroadcast or a resale. It exists because the complete series deserved that kind of treatment while the actual licensing rights were still tangled up in dispute, not because it was ever meant to compete with an official release. This site documents that project's history as part of the record, the same way it documents every other chapter of how this show reached the West.

The power level arguments are still happening. The show is still here.

Transformations

Dragon Ball Z — Ep 30: A Hot, Unbounded Battle! Goku vs Vegeta @ 02:05

Kaio-ken - First Combat Use

Saiyan Saga · A technique that temporarily forces Goku past his normal limit

Kaio-ken is not a Saiyan transformation. It is King Kai's amplification technique, included here because DBZ first teaches the audience to read visible power states through it. Goku wraps himself in a red aura and temporarily multiplies his speed, strength and ki output.

Against Nappa and Vegeta, the attraction and the problem arrive together. A higher multiplier can close an impossible gap, but Goku's body has to survive the strain afterward.
How you can tell
A red aura surrounds Goku and his body visibly tenses under the increase. Unlike Super Saiyan, his hair and eye color do not change. The danger is internal: the multiplier is forcing more performance out of the same body.

Debut: Ep 029 - Father is Awesome! The Ultimate Finishing Technique: Kaio-Ken

Dragon Ball Z Ep 32: Battle Power Times Ten!! Vegeta's Great Transformation @ 09:44

Great Ape (Oozaru) - Vegeta's Artificial Moon

Saiyan Saga · Saiyan biology weaponized on purpose

Original Dragon Ball treated the Great Ape as Goku's terrifying full-moon curse. DBZ finally explains what it is: a Saiyan transformation triggered through the tail when the right lunar stimulus is present.

Vegeta makes the old mystery tactical. When Earth's moon is unavailable, he creates a Power Ball that reproduces the necessary trigger and transforms deliberately.
How you can tell
The Saiyan grows into a gigantic ape while retaining the tail. Vegeta remains intelligent and verbal in the form, which is a major contrast with Goku and Gohan losing themselves when they transform.

Debut: Ep 032 - Battle Power Times Ten!! Vegeta's Great Transformation

Dragon Ball Z Ep 95: Transformed At Last!! The Legendary Super Saiyan, Son Goku @ 21:21

Super Saiyan - The Legend Awakens

Namek / Frieza Saga · Goku turns the Saiyan legend into something real

Frieza kills Krillin in front of Goku after the battle has already pushed everyone beyond exhaustion. Goku's rage finally crosses the threshold Vegeta spent the arc talking about: the Super Saiyan stops being a story and becomes a body standing on Namek.

The form immediately changes the terms of the fight, but its larger effect is on the franchise. A once-mythic exception becomes a power state other Saiyans can eventually pursue.
How you can tell
The hair turns gold and stands sharply upward, the eyes shift green-blue, and a bright golden aura surrounds the user. Goku's entire posture becomes calmer and more severe even while the transformation begins in rage.

Debut: Ep 095 - Transformed At Last!! The Legendary Super Saiyan, Son Goku

Dragon Ball Z Ep 155: Suddenly Full-Throttle!! The Radiant Vegeta's Super Power @ 22:20

Super Saiyan Grade 2

Android / Cell Saga · Vegeta's power-first answer to the Super Saiyan wall

Inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Vegeta and Trunks discover that standard Super Saiyan is not a fixed endpoint. They can force more ki through the transformed body and push it into a heavier, more muscular state.

Vegeta uses the controlled version against Semi-Perfect Cell and gets exactly what he wanted: enough extra power to dominate the fight. The trap is that raw output starts becoming the goal instead of the whole package.
How you can tell
The Super Saiyan look stays intact, but the frame gets noticeably heavier through the shoulders, chest and arms. Vegeta's version is the usable compromise. Trunks pushes the same idea farther into Grade 3, where the bulk becomes the problem instead of the solution.

Debut: Ep 155 - Suddenly Full-Throttle!! The Radiant Vegeta's Super Power

Dragon Ball Z Ep 162: Breaking Through the Boundaries of the Super Saiyan!! Trunks Summons a Storm @ 21:59

Super Saiyan Grade 3 - The Bulk-Up Trap

Android / Cell Saga · Trunks pushes the same idea past the useful point

Trunks takes the power-focused route beyond Vegeta's Grade 2 and inflates the Super Saiyan body even further. The result has enormous raw output and looks terrifying enough that Trunks believes he has finally surpassed the problem in front of him.

Then he tries to actually hit Perfect Cell.

Cell's lesson is brutal but simple: power that destroys the speed required to deliver it is not useful combat power. Trunks has increased one part of the equation while making the complete fighter worse.
How you can tell
The torso, shoulders and arms swell far beyond normal Super Saiyan proportions and the stance becomes visibly heavy. Grade 3 is not just 'more Grade 2.' It is the point where the bulk-up strategy crosses from compromise into self-defeat.

Debut: Ep 162 - Breaking Through the Boundaries of the Super Saiyan!! Trunks Summons a Storm

Dragon Ball Z Ep 184: The Tragedy of No. 16!! Super Gohan's Anger Explodes @ 22:07

Super Saiyan 2 - Gohan's Awakening

Cell Games · Gohan's restraint finally breaks

Cell spends the Cell Games trying to force Gohan into the anger Goku believes is hiding his real strength. Android 16's final appeal and destruction finally push Gohan across the line.

Super Saiyan 2 is not simply Gohan becoming angrier. The form gives the Cell Games a completely different power relationship: Cell's Juniors go from tormenting the cast to being dismantled in moments, and Perfect Cell suddenly has to survive the child he was provoking.
How you can tell
The golden hair becomes sharper and more rigid, the aura grows more violent, and electrical arcs crackle around the body. With Gohan, the biggest visual change may be behavioral: the hesitation disappears.

Debut: Ep 184 - The Tragedy of No. 16!! Super Gohan's Anger Explodes

Dragon Ball Z Ep 245: An Astounding, Great Transformation!! Super Saiyan 3 @ 12:20

Super Saiyan 3 - Beyond the Limits

Majin Buu Saga · Enormous output with an equally enormous cost

Goku reveals Super Saiyan 3 while stalling Majin Buu and Babidi, turning a delay tactic into one of DBZ's most extravagant transformations. The form demonstrates how far Goku pushed Super Saiyan while dead, where the normal limits of a living body were not restricting him in the same way.

Back on Earth, that difference matters. Super Saiyan 3 burns through Goku's available time and later proves difficult to sustain at full output in a living body.
How you can tell
The eyebrows disappear, the brow becomes heavier, and the golden hair grows down the back to an extreme length. The transformation is visually impossible to mistake and energetically difficult to maintain.

Debut: Ep 245 - An Astounding, Great Transformation!! Super Saiyan 3

Dragon Ball Z Ep 263: Boo is Overwhelmed!! Gohan's Miracle Power @ 17:35

Ultimate Gohan - Potential Unlocked

Majin Buu Saga · Maximum access without another Super Saiyan form

Old Kai's ritual draws out Gohan's dormant potential without asking him to climb another visible Super Saiyan stage. When Gohan returns to Earth, the point is almost the absence of transformation spectacle: he can access extraordinary power while looking recognizably like himself.

That makes Ultimate Gohan the conceptual opposite of Super Saiyan 3. Goku reaches for a spectacular form that consumes enormous energy; Gohan is given access to power without needing the same outward ladder.
How you can tell
You mostly can tell by context, expression and power. Gohan keeps dark hair and eyes rather than turning gold, while the sharper facial treatment and pale aura used in the anime signal that his potential is fully active.

Debut: Ep 263 - Boo is Overwhelmed!! Gohan's Miracle Power

Dragon Ball Z Ep 265: Boo's Worst Foul Play!! Gotenks is Absorbed?! @ 14:16

Super Buu - Absorption States

Majin Buu Saga · The villain changes according to who is trapped inside him

Super Buu turns absorption into a moving power system. Taking Piccolo, Gotenks and later Gohan does more than increase his strength; his body, clothing, intelligence and available techniques change to reflect the people inside him.

The result is a villain whose 'form' is partly a roster. Every successful absorption changes what the heroes are fighting and removes another potential answer from their side.
How you can tell
Look at the clothing and head-tentacle details. Gotenks' fusion vest, Piccolo's cape-and-collar influence and Gohan's gi each make Buu's current absorption state readable before he uses the borrowed abilities.

Debut: Ep 262 - Truly Great!! A Reborn Gohan Returns to Earth

Dragon Ball Z Ep 269: Magnificent Power!! Vegetto Surpasses the Ultimate @ 22:13

Super Vegito - Potara Fusion

Majin Buu Saga · Goku and Vegeta become one fighter

With Gohan absorbed and Super Buu at his strongest, Goku and Vegeta use the Potara earrings and become Vegito. The transformation is not a higher Super Saiyan grade belonging to either man; it is the multiplication created by combining two elite fighters into one new identity.

Vegito then turns the power gap on Buuhan so completely that being absorbed becomes part of the rescue plan rather than simply a defeat.
How you can tell
Vegito combines recognizable features and clothing from both Goku and Vegeta. As Super Vegito, the fusion adds the familiar golden Super Saiyan hair and aura on top of that merged design.
