Details & Synopsis
Naota Nandaba is twelve, bored, and trying very hard to act older than he is. Then Haruko Haruhara runs him over with a Vespa, hits him with a blue Rickenbacker bass, moves into his house, and starts treating the portal in his forehead like a normal workplace inconvenience.

FLCL was six OVA episodes released from 2000 to 2001 by Gainax and Production I.G. Six episodes was enough. It is a coming-of-age story buried inside a music video buried inside an animation staff showing off, and every attempt to explain it cleanly makes it sound less precise than it actually is. The robots, the guitars, the manga-panel sequence, the eyebrows, Medical Mechanica, all of it is attached to the same basic problem: being twelve feels enormous while every adult around you acts like it is temporary.

The Pillows soundtrack is inseparable from the show. Adult Swim understood that and aired it repeatedly, which let a six-episode OVA become a generational object for people who found it at one in the morning and had no idea what they had just seen. Then they watched it again. That was usually the correct response.

Later sequels exist. The original still ends exactly where it should.

N.O. Channel Mechanics

Archival note

N.O. is real within FLCL, but the original OVA does not give it a clean scientific manual.

This page sticks to demonstrated behavior: objects crossing impossible distances through people, Naota repeatedly serving as a route for Medical Mechanica machinery, Ninamori becoming involved after contact with him, and Haruko searching for someone capable of reaching Atomsk.

What Does N.O. Actually Do?

Matter Crossing Through Impossible Space
N.O. allows matter to move through a person from somewhere else. In Naota's case, the route opens through his head and repeatedly produces objects and Medical Mechanica machines that could not physically have been inside him.

Amarao provides explanations for N.O., but FLCL never turns them into a complete set of measurable rules. The safest way to understand the phenomenon is by watching what it does.
How you can tell
Naota grows a horn-like protrusion before something emerges. Haruko deliberately interacts with those growths. Canti and other machines cross through the opening. By the climax, the same route becomes capable of bringing Atomsk into the conflict.

Ninamori and the Transferred Growth

Episode 3 · Naota Is Not the Only Route

Episode 3 complicates the idea that the strange growths belong only to Naota.

After Naota and Ninamori collide, the horn-like growth associated with his N.O. incidents appears on Ninamori instead. A Medical Mechanica machine eventually emerges through her during the school-play crisis.
Why it matters
The episode shows that N.O. is not simply a permanent piece of hardware Haruko installed inside Naota. Whatever is happening can involve another person, and physical contact with Naota is enough to change who is carrying the problem.

Haruko Tests Kamon

A Possible Route That Goes Nowhere

Haruko does not assume Naota is the only person worth testing. Her interest in Kamon includes an attempt to see whether Naota's father can give her another useful N.O. route.

He cannot.

The result is bizarre even by Nandaba-house standards, but the important part is what Haruko learns: Kamon is not capable of giving her what Naota can.
Why it matters
Haruko's behavior makes her priorities clearer. She is not studying N.O. out of scientific curiosity. She is testing people for usefulness in her pursuit of Atomsk.

Naota's N.O. Channel

Unusually Powerful · Valuable to Haruko
Naota repeatedly becomes the route through which FLCL's impossible machinery enters Mabase.

Robots emerge through him. Weapons emerge through him. Canti repeatedly absorbs him and draws on much greater power. Eventually Naota becomes the point through which Atomsk himself can manifest.
Why it matters
This is why Haruko stays attached to Naota. His importance to her is not that he has been chosen as a conventional hero. He is an unusually useful doorway to the thing she actually wants.

Why Haruko Hits Naota with the Bass

The First Blow Opens the Problem

Haruko's first bass-guitar strike is immediately followed by the strange growth on Naota's forehead and the first arrival of machinery through him.

Later events make clear that Haruko is deliberately interested in Naota's N.O. potential and repeatedly uses her guitar around the openings that appear through him.

The OVA does not give us enough to describe the first strike as precise neurological surgery or the installation of a permanent device.
Why it matters
The hit is not just random slapstick either. It is the moment Haruko turns Naota from somebody she crashes into into somebody she can use.
