A cold, calculating Akatsuki veteran and bounty hunter who operates as the primary financial director of the syndicate's global expansion pipelines. His physical body is an unnatural tapestry of raw, black kinetic threads that allow him to detach his limbs and stitch together the stolen organs of fallen enemies. Hosting four additional harvested hearts inside his flesh, he can manipulate all five primary elemental transformations simultaneously on the field, functioning as a multi life engine of destruction who evaluates all human combatants by their monetary bounty weight.

Akatsuki takes paid work because money and reputation are part of Nagato's road to political power. A small organization of elite missing-nin can accept dangerous jobs without maintaining a village, civilian population or national bureaucracy. That lets Akatsuki build funds while also competing with the institutions it ultimately intends to make obsolete.
Why it worked
The members do not need to share Nagato's philosophy for the business model to function. Kakuzu can care about money, Hidan can care about Jashin, Deidara can care about art, and the organization can still turn their private motives into useful labor.

Hidan and Kakuzu openly irritate each other, but their pairing solves a practical problem. Kakuzu has a history of killing partners when angered. Hidan cannot be killed through ordinary physical damage. Hidan's ritual fighting style is reckless and requires time and blood; Kakuzu supplies ranged pressure, multiple elemental attacks and the experience to keep a larger battle under control.
Why it worked
Their personalities are a terrible match and their bodies are a remarkably good one. Akatsuki does not solve their hostility. It gives that hostility a partnership sturdy enough to survive it.

The Breakdown
Hidan ingested Asuma's blood signature to trigger his dark voodoo ritual. Despite Shikamaru temporarily pulling Hidan off the symbol, Kakuzu's intervention allowed Hidan to re-enter the circle and pierce his own heart, inflicting a fatal wound on Asuma.

Team 10's revenge mission becomes a full Akatsuki engagement once Kakashi joins them, with Hidan's ritual and Kakuzu's hidden hearts forcing the Leaf team to divide its attention between two very different threats.
The Breakdown
Kakashi destroys one of Kakuzu's hearts with Lightning Blade, but the apparent kill exposes Earth Grudge Fear and its autonomous masks; Shikamaru then draws Hidan away, splitting the encounter into separate fights.

With Hidan isolated in the Nara forest, Kakashi, Ino, and Chōji are left against Kakuzu and his elemental masks, turning the original ambush into a prolonged survival fight.
The Breakdown
Kakashi counters the masks' coordinated elemental attacks while protecting Team 10, but Kakuzu keeps replacing lost hearts until Naruto and Yamato arrive to take over the finish.
