A cocky, shark toothed rogue swordsman from the Hidden Mist who was held captive inside Orochimaru's laboratory pipelines before being extracted by Sasuke to serve as the frontline vanguard of squad Hebi. Wielding Zabuza's massive, reconstructed Kubikiribocho blade, his ancestral Hydrification technique allows him to liquefy his physical mass at will, rendering him completely immune to conventional close quarters physical strikes. He manipulates his muscle volume through water compression to deliver high output kinetic slashes, relentlessly pursuing his singular goal to gather all the legendary swords of the Mist.

After turning on Orochimaru, Sasuke does not return to Konoha and he does not stay alone. He builds Hebi around the one job that has governed most of his life: find Itachi Uchiha and kill him. The team is small because it is supposed to move fast, work outside the villages, and give Sasuke capabilities he does not have by himself.
Why it matters
Hebi is not a replacement Team 7. Sasuke recruits people who can help solve the practical problems between him and Itachi, while each recruit gets enough freedom to pursue a reason of their own for coming with him.
First Akatsuki Assignment · Mutual Rescue · Sasuke Cannot Do It Alone
The Eight-Tails mission strips away the idea that Taka is just Sasuke plus three assistants. Killer B overwhelms him badly enough that survival becomes a team effort. Karin keeps people alive, Jugo gives up part of himself to repair Sasuke, and Suigetsu puts his own body between the team and Gyuki. Sasuke, in turn, keeps choosing to pull them back together instead of abandoning the mission's casualties.
Why it matters
The Combat Ledger can explain how the fight works. The important thing here is what it reveals: Taka stays alive because the four have become mutually dependent, and Sasuke is still capable of valuing that bond.

Sasuke does not recruit three interchangeable fighters. Suigetsu gives the group another dangerous combatant with knowledge of Orochimaru's world and his own reason to travel. Karin gives Sasuke the sensor he needs for a search built around locating people who do not want to be found. Jugo adds overwhelming force, but also joins because Sasuke is tied to Kimimaro, the person Jugo trusted most.
Why it worked
The useful part is the combination. Hebi can search, split up, survive contact with high-level enemies, and regroup without asking a village for intelligence or support. Sasuke has effectively built his own tiny rogue-nin network.
Same Four Members · New Name · New Enemy
Sasuke renames Hebi as Taka and redirects the group toward Konoha. Nothing about the roster changes. Everything about the reason for keeping the roster together does. Hebi existed to reach Itachi. Taka exists because learning why Itachi died leaves Sasuke convinced that the village itself must answer for it.
What changed
The rename is a headspace marker. Sasuke is no longer the younger brother trying to kill Itachi. He is the survivor deciding what Itachi's sacrifice means, and for this part of the story he decides it means revenge against Konoha.
Revenge Narrows · Team Structure Erodes · Karin Becomes Expendable
The closer Sasuke gets to Danzo, the less the team matters beside the target. The restraint and mutual dependence visible against Killer B begin disappearing. Suigetsu and Jugo are left behind in the chaos, and when Danzo takes Karin hostage Sasuke is willing to drive an attack through her to reach him.
What changed
Hebi was built because Sasuke needed other people. Taka survived Killer B because those people saved one another. At the summit, revenge has narrowed Sasuke's world enough that a teammate can become acceptable collateral.
Distributed Search · Akatsuki Interference · Hebi Operates Independently
Finding Itachi is the first proof that Hebi is more than three people following Sasuke down a road. The team spreads out to gather information, works through the remains of Orochimaru's network, and keeps moving even when Akatsuki deliberately gets in the way. Sasuke finally has people extending his reach instead of slowing him down.
Why it worked
Everyone understands the mission even if they do not share Sasuke's obsession. Sasuke wants Itachi. The others only need their own reasons to keep moving in the same direction.
Temporary Alignment · Eight-Tails Assignment · Different End Goals
Taka works with Akatsuki because the arrangement is useful to Sasuke, not because the four suddenly become believers in Akatsuki's cause. Obito gives Sasuke information, direction, and a path toward the people he now blames for Itachi's life. In return, Taka is sent after the Eight-Tails.
Why it worked
This is cooperation, not ideological conversion. Obito needs Sasuke pointed somewhere useful. Sasuke needs access and leverage. Both sides believe they are using the other, which is exactly why the arrangement can function without genuine trust.
A Team Built Around Sasuke · Strongest When the Goal Left Room for People
Hebi and Taka are the same four people, but they are not the same team in practice. Hebi has a narrow objective and enough space for everyone to keep their own motives. Early Taka survives because those relationships have become real enough to matter. Later Taka begins coming apart when Sasuke's revenge stops leaving room for anyone who is not the target.
Why it matters
That is why the rename is worth tracking as more than trivia. The roster stays almost perfectly stable while the purpose, the leadership, and Sasuke's willingness to value the people beside him change underneath it.
Shared Risk · Mutual Dependence · More Than a Search Party
Hebi begins as a practical arrangement, but the longer the four operate together the less clean that description becomes. They argue, split up, cover for one another, and repeatedly choose to regroup. Sasuke still talks and acts like the mission is what matters, but he is once again functioning inside a team whether he wants to name that attachment or not.
Why it matters
That contradiction gives the later collapse its weight. Sasuke can insist people are tools while still behaving like someone who has started depending on them. Taka only hurts as a story because Hebi first proves that he is capable of building those connections again.
