The Soul Society arc works because the rescue mission collides with an institution that believes it is enforcing its own law. Rukia accepts the sentence, Renji is torn between duty and the person he grew up with, Byakuya treats obedience as the Kuchiki obligation, and Ichigo's group sees only a friend about to be killed. The closer the execution moves, the harder it becomes for every character to pretend those positions are compatible.

Renji and Byakuya come to the living world to take Rukia back for transferring her powers to a human, and Ichigo discovers how far below a real Soul Society officer he still is. Byakuya cuts him down and removes the power Rukia gave him. The series could have ended the premise there. Instead, Ichigo decides that losing the borrowed power does not end his obligation to her.
