Arrived via cryogenic pod and a stack of debt that was not technically hers but got assigned to her anyway. Con artist, sharp, self-protective, presenting a front of pure mercenary disinterest that the show quietly and consistently undermines across twenty-six episodes. Faye does not know who she was before the freezing. The search for that person runs underneath everything she does and every wall she builds. The tough act is real. So is everything underneath it. One of the great slow-burn character studies in the medium.

Why it matters
The person searching hardest for a past is also the person trained by experience to assume anybody offering help probably wants something from her.
The Betamax tape contains Faye before the accident and before the amnesia, speaking optimistically to her future self.
What changed
Faye finally encounters undeniable evidence that the person she cannot remember was real. The tape gives her continuity without giving her memory back.
Faye reaches the place connected to her childhood and finds ruins rather than restoration.
Why it matters
The search succeeds geographically and fails emotionally. That is one of Cowboy Bebop's clearest statements that recovering the past and recovering a life are different things.
