The "Hand of the Gods." While the trio faces dozens of eccentric assassins and bizarre figures on their journey, Kariya represents the ultimate, terrifying reality of the Shogunate's power. He doesn't need flashy moves or a gimmick; his swordsmanship is so transcendentally perfect that it feels almost supernatural. He is the insurmountable final boss who finally forces Mugen and Jin to push past their absolute physical and mental limits.

Mugen attacks Kariya Kagetoki during the final approach to Ikitsuki and discovers that unpredictability alone cannot solve the gap between them. Kariya reads his attacks, neutralizes his rhythm and knocks him out of the fight.
The Breakdown
The point is not a supernatural 'ki perception' statistic. Kariya is simply the first opponent in the finale who makes Mugen's usual ability to improvise look insufficient.
Episodes 25–26 · Jin vs. Kariya · Final duel
Jin faces Kariya Kagetoki, the official who helped turn the history of Jin's dojo into a machinery of political violence. Kariya is the stronger conventional swordsman and repeatedly controls the duel.
The Breakdown
Jin finally wins by accepting a wound in order to create the opening Kariya's normal defense will not give him. The victory completes Jin's rejection of a system that equates mastery with obedience.

Open page →The finale reveals more of the chain of pressure behind Jin killing his master. Kariya had pushed Jin's school toward service as assassins, and Jin's master was ultimately ordered to kill him.
Why it matters
Jin's disgrace comes from refusing a system that treats loyalty as obedience. His final fight with Kariya is therefore larger than revenge for a dojo.
Fuu goes to Seizo. Mugen is pulled into revenge from his Ryukyu past. Jin remains to face Kariya and the political machinery connected to his dojo.
Why it matters
The last arc does not invent three separate finales. It reveals the three histories the road has been carrying together all along.
