The ice master of Team Masho is one of the more serious fighters Yusuke's group meets during the Dark Tournament. Toya shapes his demon energy into ice, including a sword and projectiles, and faces Kurama after Gama has already sealed much of Kurama's power. That advantage does not make the fight easy. Kurama ultimately defeats him by turning a wound in his own body into the base for a plant attack, a solution that earns Toya's respect rather than hatred. Like Jin, Toya is not especially invested in the tournament committee's corruption or the crowd's bloodlust. He wants to test his skill. He later trains with Genkai, joins the Demon World conflict through Kurama and enters the tournament there as an ally, giving one of the better Dark Tournament opponents a deserved return.
