Frieza has returned. After the enormous, planet-destroying struggle on Namek, the former emperor of the universe arrives on Earth rebuilt with cybernetic parts and accompanied by his father, King Cold. He has survived the impossible, become even stronger, and travelled directly to Goku’s homeworld to take revenge.
Under normal circumstances, that would be enough material for another prolonged crisis. The heroes would gather. Vegeta would posture. Frieza would threaten the planet. Goku would arrive at the final possible second.
Instead, a teenage boy in a denim jacket walks into the desert carrying a sword.
Gallery results come back as an image grid. Character-tagged faces rise to the top. Series vs sequels (Naruto / Shippuuden, Dragon Ball / DBZ, FMA / Brotherhood) are getting smarter about not mixing the wrong timeline into your results.
No AI API yet. Just PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, and your archive doing the work. AI can sit on top later if we want it; this layer stays the source of truth.
The catch: 600,000+ images
Search only gets great when faces are tagged.
We’ve got character tagging in the lightbox now! Draw a box, pick a name (or create a minor), done. Staff tags auto-approve. Everyone else goes through pending so we don’t drown in junk.
But here’s the honest math: over 600K screencaps. I cannot tag all of that alone. Not even close.
If you love a series: Naruto, DBZ, Sailor Moon, Bleach, whatever you actually watch. Open the gallery, open a cap, tag who you see. Five minutes here and there compounds into something the whole site can search.
For roughly the last 24 hours, AnimeHistory.org has been doing something a little ridiculous.
We went digging through the Wayback Machine.
Not casually. Page by page, capture by capture, following dead project links, old torrent indexes, forgotten Blogspot pages, IRC references, release manifests and fansub group sites that have been offline for twenty years.
The result is one of the largest fansub-history updates we have made to the archive.
A large number of our fansub group profiles, series release records and Fansub & Scanlation History pages have now been updated with surviving contemporary evidence. In many cases, information that previously depended on later databases or community memory can now be tied directly to the groups themselves.
That distinction matters.
And this search turned up some incredible examples.
A lot of work happened this week.
Most of it you'll probably never notice.
But the site's getting better.
Whats new? IDK, Lore n' Stuff
A bunch of episode descriptions have been rewritten across the site. Some were old, some were vague, some were technically correct but clearly written from fifty feet away from the actual episode. I've been going back through them properly, episode by episode, making sure the descriptions actually explain what happens instead of vaguely announcing that "the battle continues."
If you can figure out which ones changed without me telling you, congratulations. You may actually be the second person visiting this website.
Anime Lore pages are continuing to be improved too
I've been writing new Lore, cleaning older pages, expanding entries that were a little too thin, and doing a lot more interlinking between related characters, episodes, concepts, fights, organizations and story events.
The idea is that Lore shouldn't just be a pile of separate encyclopedia entries. If you're reading about one part of a story, you should be able to naturally fall into the next relevant piece. A technique can lead into the fight where it mattered. A character relationship can lead into the event that changed it. An organization can connect to the people actually driving it.
The biggest addition is the new Featured section, with four spots: Anime of the Month, From the Old Web, From the Archive, and Featured Character. Anime of the Month is an old habit coming back, I used to run one on my anime site more than twenty years ago, so apparently some webmaster instincts never die. The artwork for Anime of the Month and Featured Character comes directly out of the archive itself. The images get the crosshatched treatment you see around the site, and hovering over them clears it away so you can see the screencap underneath. The whole thing is wired into the admin now too, so these aren't decorative boxes waiting for me to edit PHP every time I want to change something.
The Sidebar Finally Makes Sense
This one has been bothering me forever. The old sidebar technically had a lot in it, but visually it was one enormous list: navigation, reviews, updates, community stuff, affiliates, login, statistics, all just running together. That's finally been broken into proper sections. Logged out, you'll see Join the Archive at the top. Logged in, that becomes Your Archive, with your avatar, profile, private messages, followed updates, new activity, and account controls. There's also a proper little Site section now with Homepage, Contact Us, Disclaimer, and Affiliate With Us. I spent enough years building anime sites in the old web era that I'm apparently incapable of making a website without those links being easy to find.
The Archive Is a Little Easier to Understand at a Glance
There's an Archive Statistics section now too. As of today the Gallery sits at over 309,000 images, and that number keeps moving. More importantly, we now track complete screencap collections, and there are currently 17 series with full episodic coverage, including Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden, Dragon Ball Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion, CowboyBebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Initial D, FLCL, Tenchi Muyo!, and a pile of others. That number matters more to me than just stating how many images are in the database, because there's a big difference between having thousands of random screenshots and being able to open a series and move episode by episode through the entire thing. That's what the Gallery has slowly turned into.
