An object Goku has carried since episode one turns out to be part of Earth's divine architecture. Dragon Ball is quietly connecting its earliest adventure props to its later mythology.

Baba's matches begin as another set of weird Dragon Ball gimmicks: a vampire, an invisible man, a mummy, Devilman. Then the fifth fighter walks out wearing a mask and matches Goku in a way nobody else there can.
He knows the tail weakness. He moves like somebody who understands Goku instead of merely fighting him. When the mask comes off, the tournament stops being about winning Baba's help.

Why it matters
Dragon Ball is usually very good at moving forward. Grandpa Gohan's return is one of the rare times it lets Goku stop and touch the life he had before Bulma ever arrived.
A goodbye instead of a power-up
Goku does not get a new technique from Grandpa Gohan. He gets reassurance. Gohan can see the child he raised has friends, teachers and a life much larger than the mountain home they shared.
For Goku, who usually processes the world through food, fighting and immediate problems, the reunion is unusually naked emotion. Then Gohan leaves again, because the point is not to restore the old life. It is to let Goku keep going without wondering whether he lost it unfinished.

Why it matters
The scene gives emotional weight to the Four-Star Ball. It is not just the rare Dragon Ball Goku happens to like. It is the object he carries because it is how he keeps Grandpa Gohan with him.

The masked fighter knows Goku's rhythm and, more importantly, knows about the tail weakness. For a while the audience gets a strange sight: somebody fighting Goku like they have known him for years.
The Breakdown
The reveal matters more than the result. Grandpa Gohan is not here to test whether Goku deserves a prize. He gets to see what became of the child he raised, and Goku gets one impossible reunion before continuing forward.
