Tien Shinhan vs. Cyborg Tao

Open →

Quarterfinal · Episode 136

Tao returns rebuilt with weapons in his body and expects the old master-student hierarchy to reassert itself. Tien refuses to play along. He is stronger, calmer and no longer interested in being intimidated by the man who represented the life he walked away from.
The Breakdown
The fight is short because it is closure, not escalation. Tien does not need another long moral argument about the Crane School. He beats Tao without becoming Tao.

Yamcha vs. Tien Shinhan

Open →

Quarterfinal · Episode 87

Yamcha enters with improved speed, a refined Wolf Fang Fist and enough confidence to attack the Crane School's star pupil directly. Tien answers with a colder, more punishing style and keeps going after the competitive question has already been settled.
The Breakdown
The broken leg is the point. Tien is introduced as somebody trained to treat humiliation and unnecessary injury as proof of superiority. His later change only means something because Dragon Ball first lets us see exactly what he has to change from.

Goku vs. Tien Shinhan

22nd Tournament Final · Episodes 97–101

The final starts as the purest skill match Dragon Ball has staged and gradually becomes Tien choosing who he wants to be. Shen orders Chiaotzu to paralyze Goku; Tien realizes what is happening and refuses the stolen victory.
The Breakdown
By the time Tien destroys the arena with the Kikoho, the ideological fight is already over. He wants to defeat Goku cleanly. The actual result comes down to both fighters falling from the sky and Goku hitting a vehicle first. Tien gets the title, but neither man walks away believing the other was lesser.

Goku vs. Tien Shinhan — Rematch

Open →

Semifinal · Episodes 139–140

Three years after their razor-close final, Goku and Tien meet again and the gap has changed. Goku removes his weighted clothing, reads the Multi-Form weakness immediately and turns a former equal into proof of what Kami's training actually accomplished.
The Breakdown
Tien is not diminished by losing. He is the measuring stick. Because the previous fight was so close, watching Goku control the rematch tells you more about his growth than another training montage could.
