Kira is a Coordinator engineering student living in the neutral colony Heliopolis when a ZAFT attack puts him inside the experimental Strike Gundam. He never wanted to be a soldier, but he is the only person present who can rewrite the machine's operating system quickly enough to make it fight. That talent immediately traps him between two worlds. His closest civilian friends are Naturals aboard the Archangel, while his childhood friend Athrun is now a ZAFT pilot trying to capture the same Gundams Kira is defending. Kira becomes frighteningly good at combat and hates what that says about the situation he is in. Later, the Freedom gives him a way to fight with more control over who survives. His story is less about becoming unbeatable than deciding what strength is actually for.

THE BREAKDOWN: this is the fight that costs Kira his first real kill of someone he never wanted dead, and the show treats it as a genuine rupture rather than a combat statistic.
