The Cosmic Era. Humanity has divided itself along a new axis: Naturals, humans born without modification, and Coordinators, humans whose genetic potential was engineered before birth. The technology exists. The resentment it produced exists in equal measure. The war was always coming.

It arrives on February 14th. The Bloody Valentine, a nuclear strike on the Coordinator colony Junius Seven by Natural forces. Three hundred thousand dead. The conflict that follows is what the series inherits.

Produced by Sunrise and directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED aired on MBS from 2002 to 2003. Fifty episodes set in an alternate Gundam timeline, not the Universal Century, not After Colony, something new, built to bring a generation of viewers to the franchise who had either missed Gundam Wing on Toonami or been too young to catch it. It worked. SEED was one of the most downloaded anime of 2002 and 2003. The fansub community turned it around fast because the demand was there and the official release was not.

Kira Yamato is a Coordinator who has been living among Naturals, comfortable in the gap, until the war finds him and he ends up in the cockpit of the Strike Gundam by necessity rather than choice. His childhood friend Athrun Zala is on the ZAFT side, flying for the people Kira is now fighting against. The series is smart enough to make both of them right and both of them wrong simultaneously, and patient enough to let that contradiction sit.

The Freedom Gundam. Lacus Clyne. The moment the show stops hedging about what it is and commits. These are the things people remember.

A sequel series, Gundam SEED Destiny, followed in 2004. Its reputation is complicated. SEED's is not. Fifty episodes of the best entry point the Gundam franchise has produced since Wing.

Kira is a Coordinator engineering student living in the neutral colony Heliopolis when a ZAFT attack puts him inside the experimental Strike Gundam. He never wanted to be a soldier, but he is the only person present who can rewrite the machine's operating system quickly enough to make it fight. That talent immediately traps him between two worlds. His closest civilian friends are Naturals aboard the Archangel, while his childhood friend Athrun is now a ZAFT pilot trying to capture the same Gundams Kira is defending. Kira becomes frighteningly good at combat and hates what that says about the situation he is in. Later, the Freedom gives him a way to fight with more control over who survives. His story is less about becoming unbeatable than deciding what strength is actually for.

ZAFT Red / Aegis and Justice Pilot

Athrun Zala is a gifted Coordinator, a childhood friend of Kira Yamato and the son of PLANT political leader Patrick Zala. After his mother is killed in the Bloody Valentine nuclear attack, Athrun joins ZAFT and becomes one of its elite red-uniform pilots. That puts him in the cockpit of the stolen Aegis Gundam and, almost immediately, on the opposite side of a war from Kira. Their friendship makes every encounter harder because neither can reduce the other to a faceless enemy. As Patrick's politics become increasingly extreme, Athrun is forced to decide whether loyalty to ZAFT, loyalty to his father and loyalty to his own conscience can still mean the same thing. He eventually pilots the Justice Gundam and fights to stop the war rather than simply win it for one side.

Major Supporting / PLANT Singer and Political Leader

Lacus is the daughter of PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Siegel Clyne, a famous singer and initially Athrun's arranged fiancee. Her gentle manner and pink Haros make it easy for other characters to mistake softness for passivity. Kira learns otherwise after rescuing her. Lacus listens carefully, makes decisions for herself and eventually turns against Patrick Zala's leadership when the war moves toward extermination rather than defense. She helps Kira escape with the Freedom Gundam, joins the Three Ships Alliance and becomes one of the political voices arguing that neither Naturals nor Coordinators need to win by erasing the other. Lacus never stops being kind or soft-spoken. Gundam SEED simply refuses to treat those qualities as evidence that she cannot make dangerous people very nervous when she decides they are wrong.

Major Supporting / Orb Princess and Resistance Fighter

Cagalli first appears in North Africa fighting beside the Desert Dawn resistance, loud enough and stubborn enough that Kira has no idea she is actually the daughter of Orb leader Uzumi Nara Athha. She would much rather be helping civilians directly than standing safely behind her title, which repeatedly puts her in places a princess probably should not be. Cagalli's relationship with Athrun grows out of the fact that both are carrying countries, parents and loyalties they did not entirely choose. Her connection to Kira is even more surprising: they are twins separated at birth. By the final stretch, Cagalli is not simply the angry girl yelling from the cockpit. She becomes part of Orb's political future and one of the people trying to keep the war from reducing everyone to Natural versus Coordinator.

Primary Antagonist / ZAFT Commander and Providence Pilot

Rau Le Creuset commands the ZAFT team that attacks Heliopolis and spends most of Gundam SEED wearing a silver mask, speaking politely and encouraging everybody around him to continue making the worst possible choices. He is an excellent commander and mobile suit pilot, but the calm professionalism hides a very personal hatred of humanity. Rau is a clone of Al Da Flaga, Mu La Flaga's father, created as a replacement heir and left with accelerated aging and the knowledge that his life began as somebody else's attempt to defeat death. He turns that bitterness outward. Rau does not really want ZAFT to defeat the Earth Alliance. He wants Naturals and Coordinators to keep escalating until both sides destroy each other. The Providence Gundam simply gives him the firepower to push that argument personally.

Mu La Flaga

Major Supporting / Archangel Ace Pilot

Mu is the Earth Alliance ace known as the Hawk of Endymion and the experienced pilot the Archangel desperately needs after Heliopolis falls. He starts in the Moebius Zero, later flies a Skygrasper and eventually takes over the Strike after Kira moves to the Freedom. Mu is relaxed, confident and much better at talking to frightened teenagers than most of the officers around them, which makes him one of the ship's stabilizing adults. He also shares a strange instinctive awareness with Rau Le Creuset that gradually turns out to have a family connection. Rau was cloned from Mu's father, Al Da Flaga. Mu's relationship with Murrue grows quietly through the war, and his apparent sacrifice protecting the Archangel gives his favorite line about making the impossible possible a considerably less playful meaning.

Supporting / ZAFT Duel Gundam Pilot

Yzak is one of ZAFT's elite red-uniform pilots and the hot-headed pilot of the stolen Duel Gundam. He begins the series furious at Kira, Athrun and almost anyone else who makes him feel overlooked. A scar left during battle with the Strike turns that anger into a personal obsession, and Yzak spends a good part of the war convinced that destroying Kira will settle something inside him. It does not. The longer the conflict continues, the harder it becomes to pretend every Natural is an enemy and every ZAFT order is automatically just. Yzak remains loud, proud and capable of shouting through situations other people might approach calmly, but he also develops a stronger sense of what he is actually fighting for. By the end, he is willing to turn his weapons against the people pushing both sides toward extermination.

Supporting / ZAFT Buster Gundam Pilot

Dearka pilots the stolen Buster Gundam and initially treats the war with the confidence of a talented ZAFT soldier who has never had much reason to question what he has been taught about Naturals. That begins changing after the Archangel captures him. Living among the people he had dismissed as enemies, especially Miriallia Haww, forces Dearka to see the human cost behind the slogans. Their relationship is messy from the start because Miriallia is grieving Tolle and Dearka was part of the force fighting them, but that discomfort is exactly what makes the shift believable. Dearka eventually chooses to fight alongside the Archangel rather than return obediently to ZAFT. He never becomes a different personality. He is still laid-back and sarcastic. He just stops letting that ease substitute for thinking about what the war is doing.

Nicol Amalfi

Supporting / ZAFT Blitz Gundam Pilot

Nicol is the youngest member of Rau Le Creuset's Gundam team, pilot of the stealth-equipped Blitz and easily the gentlest personality among the group. He is a gifted pianist who would rather talk about music than prove himself through combat, but the war gives him little room to stay outside it. Nicol is especially close to Athrun and often acts as the person willing to lower the temperature when Yzak's temper turns the team against itself. His death becomes one of Gundam SEED's major breaking points. During the fight with Kira, Nicol moves to protect Athrun and is killed by the Strike. The loss sends Athrun and Kira into their most violent confrontation, each blaming the other for a death produced by a war neither of them originally wanted.

Natarle Badgiruel

Major Supporting / Archangel Executive Officer

Natarle is the Archangel's executive officer and the person most likely to insist that military procedure still matters while the ship is full of civilians, teenagers and officers improvising their way across the planet. She comes from a military family and often clashes with Murrue because Natarle prioritizes orders and tactical necessity where Murrue is more willing to bend for the people aboard. That does not make Natarle heartless. It makes her a career officer trying to hold onto structure while the Earth Alliance itself becomes harder to trust. Later she is given command of the Dominion under Muruta Azrael, placing her on the opposite side from her former crew. Her final stand against Azrael makes clear that obedience always had a limit. He simply finds it too late.

Murrue Ramius

Major Supporting / Captain of the Archangel

Murrue is an Earth Alliance officer and engineer who becomes captain of the Archangel because most of the people who were supposed to command it die during the attack on Heliopolis. She is suddenly responsible for a new warship, a group of civilian refugees and several teenagers who were never meant to become military personnel. Murrue leads with more empathy than Natarle initially considers appropriate, but the difference is not incompetence. She understands that getting the ship home means keeping the people aboard functioning as people, not just crew positions. Her relationship with Mu grows out of that long stretch of shared responsibility and near disasters. By the time the Archangel breaks from the Earth Alliance, Murrue has learned to trust her own judgment even when the uniform and the orders are pointing somewhere else.

Major Supporting / Civilian Survivor and Kira's Manipulator

Flay begins as one of the Heliopolis civilians trapped aboard the Archangel, sheltered enough that the war feels distant until her father is killed in front of her. Her grief turns quickly into hatred of Coordinators, and Kira becomes the easiest person nearby to blame, need and manipulate all at once. Flay deliberately uses Kira's feelings for her to keep him fighting, telling herself that sending a Coordinator to kill other Coordinators is a kind of revenge. It is ugly, and Gundam SEED knows it is ugly. What makes Flay more than a simple villain is that the series lets the consequences catch up with her. Separation from Kira gives her time to understand what she did and what he meant to her. By the time she wants to change things, the war is no longer interested in giving anyone clean timing.

Patrick Zala

Major Antagonist / PLANT Supreme Council Chairman

Patrick Zala is Athrun's father and one of the most powerful political figures in the PLANTs. The death of his wife Lenore in the Bloody Valentine nuclear attack hardens his fear and anger toward Naturals into something much more dangerous. As ZAFT's leadership shifts, Patrick stops treating the war as a fight for Coordinator independence and begins moving toward outright extermination. He pushes Operation Spitbreak, embraces increasingly extreme weapons and ultimately turns GENESIS into a threat against Earth itself. Athrun's refusal to follow him makes the conflict painfully personal. Patrick loves his dead wife and believes he is protecting his people, but Gundam SEED does not allow those facts to excuse what he becomes. Grief explains the road. It does not make the destination acceptable.

Muruta Azrael

Major Antagonist / Blue Cosmos Leader

Azrael is a powerful industrialist, leading figure in Blue Cosmos and the man who gives the Earth Alliance's anti-Coordinator hatred a very expensive command chair. He treats Coordinators as an existential contamination rather than another population caught in a political conflict, and his influence helps push the Alliance toward nuclear attacks on the PLANTs. Azrael later operates from the Dominion, where Natarle Badgiruel discovers exactly what it means to have a civilian extremist overriding military judgment in real time. He is impatient, vindictive and perfectly willing to sacrifice allied soldiers if the result hurts ZAFT more. Gundam SEED pairs Azrael with Patrick Zala deliberately. Both men claim to be defending their own people while driving the war toward a point where there may be nobody left to defend.

Andrew Waltfeld

Major Supporting / Desert Tiger and ZAFT Commander

Andrew Waltfeld is the ZAFT commander known as the Desert Tiger, a coffee obsessive who can discuss bean blends with Kira one day and try to kill him in a mobile suit the next. That contradiction is exactly why his desert arc works. Waltfeld is an enemy commander, but he is not a cartoon villain. He understands that soldiers on both sides are people and forces Kira to confront the fact that recognizing an opponent's humanity does not make the next battle disappear. Their fight appears to kill Waltfeld and his partner Aisha, but Waltfeld survives, losing an eye and an arm. Later he rejects the direction Patrick Zala is taking ZAFT, joins Lacus Clyne's side and becomes captain of the Eternal. The man Kira once had to defeat eventually fights beside him to stop the war.
