An anime-original character and Syaoran's cousin from Hong Kong, Meiling arrives in Tomoeda with enormous confidence, excellent martial arts skills and the firm belief that she and Syaoran are going to marry. Unlike Syaoran she has no magical power, so she attacks supernatural problems with training, speed and pure refusal to be left out. Her rivalry with Sakura begins loudly but becomes genuine friendship, and one of Meiling's strongest moments comes much later when she realizes Syaoran loves someone else. She releases him from their childhood engagement, cries where he cannot see her, and still pushes him to be honest with Sakura.

They happen as the old system is being resolved around them.
Why it matters
Sakura finishes inheriting the cards at the same time she starts understanding her own heart without relying on the crush that defined the beginning of the series.
