Lelouch is an exiled Britannian prince living under the name Lelouch Lamperouge in occupied Japan, where he spends his school days looking bored and his nights resenting the empire that discarded him and Nunnally. C.C. gives him Geass, the power to issue one irresistible command to anyone who meets his gaze, and Lelouch immediately turns that impossible advantage into the masked identity Zero. He is brilliant, theatrical and very good at treating a battlefield like a chessboard right up until actual people refuse to behave like pieces. That gap drives most of the series. Lelouch can plan rebellions several moves ahead and still make catastrophic decisions when emotion gets involved. His love for Nunnally is genuine, his ego is enormous and the Zero Requiem ultimately asks whether one final manipulation can pay for everything he did to reach it.

Charles and Marianne's endgame is not ordinary imperial conquest. They intend to use the collective unconscious in C's World to erase the separation that allows people to lie to one another, collapsing individual distance in the name of perfect understanding. Lelouch rejects the plan because a world without deception also removes the private choices, changes, and futures that make people separate human beings.
Turn 21 · The Collective Unconscious
Lelouch defeats Charles and Marianne by appealing to the collective will itself, demanding that time continue rather than be frozen in their idealized past. It is the philosophical pivot of the finale. Lelouch began the series obsessed with avenging his mother; when he finally gets her back, he rejects both parents because their answer would steal the future from everyone else.

Once the massacre begins, Lelouch cannot undo the command and cannot publicly explain what happened. He kills Euphemia, brands her as the symbol of Britannian cruelty, and uses the catastrophe to ignite rebellion. It is one of the defining Lelouch choices: the original disaster is accidental, but turning Euphie's death into revolutionary fuel is deliberate.
R2: MEMORY, RETURN & BETRAYAL //

After the Black Rebellion, Emperor Charles uses Geass to rewrite Lelouch's memories. Nunnally is removed from his life and Rolo is inserted as a younger brother while Britannia watches Ashford for signs that Zero will return. C.C. and the surviving Black Knights attack Babel Tower not just to rescue a leader, but to give Lelouch his own history back.
Turn 19 · Escape
Lelouch spends much of R2 manipulating Rolo's desperate need for family and privately intends to discard him. When the Black Knights turn on Zero, Rolo saves Lelouch anyway, repeatedly using his Geass despite knowing the strain will kill him. His death leaves Lelouch with one more person who loved him more honestly than Lelouch treated them.

Lelouch creates Zero because Lelouch vi Britannia cannot openly lead a Japanese rebellion. The mask protects Nunnally, separates Ashford life from the war, and gives frightened resistance cells a symbol larger than any one commander. The theatrical voice and impossible entrances are not vanity alone. Zero has to look like the kind of person who can beat Britannia before anyone has proof that he actually can.
Stage 10–11 · Landslide Strategy · Civilian Cost
Narita is the first time Zero's planning makes an elite Britannian force look genuinely beatable. It is also where the series refuses to let tactical brilliance stay clean: the engineered landslide destroys homes below the battlefield and kills Shirley's father. From this point on, Lelouch cannot pretend the war's collateral damage belongs only to Britannia.

After Charles is gone, Lelouch does not dismantle Britannia and retire. He takes the throne, breaks the old aristocratic order, seizes control of the empire, and then deliberately makes himself the center of global hatred. The cruelty is part of the design. If every surviving faction can agree on one tyrant, his removal can become a shared beginning instead of another victory for one side.
Turn 25 · The Parade
Lelouch stages his victory parade with political prisoners displayed beneath him, concentrating the world's anger into one public image. Suzaku appears as Zero and kills him in front of the crowd. Because the assassination is visible and symbolic, Zero instantly changes from the face of rebellion into the person who ended the Demon Emperor.
FACTIONS & GEOPOLITICS //
Open page →Zero turns a small resistance group into the Order of the Black Knights by giving it something most anti-Britannian cells lack: a public identity and a rule for when it claims the right to use force. 'Allies of Justice' is propaganda, but effective propaganda. By R2 the organization has grown far beyond a Japanese insurgency and becomes the military core of an international political order.
The United Federation of Nations (U.F.N.)
SPOILER! Shared Sovereignty · The Black Knights Become an Army Open →The United Federation of Nations is Zero's answer to a basic problem: Britannia is too large for Japan to defeat alone. Member states pool military responsibility under the Black Knights instead of maintaining separate national armies capable of being defeated one at a time. It is the moment Zero's rebellion stops being merely anti-Britannian resistance and becomes an attempt to build a rival world order.
GEASS MECHANICS & ORDER //
Open page →Lelouch's Geass lets him issue an absolute command after making direct eye contact with a target. Once the command takes hold, the victim carries it out even when it violates loyalty, self-preservation, or conscious intent. That makes Geass devastating in a tactical situation, but the series repeatedly turns its greatest strength against Lelouch whenever wording, timing, or incomplete information matters.
LELOUCH & SUZAKU //
Open page →Lelouch and Suzaku want a future in which the occupation's cruelty ends, but they start from opposite conclusions. Lelouch believes Britannia is too corrupt to reform and must be broken from outside. Suzaku believes illegal rebellion only creates more victims and that legitimacy has to be won from inside the system. Code Geass keeps making both boys prove the ugliest parts of the other's argument.
Stage 25 · Identity Exposed
By the end of R1, Suzaku knows Lelouch is Zero and Lelouch knows there is no civilian friendship left to hide behind. Their confrontation on Kamine Island is the point where every concealed identity becomes personal evidence of betrayal. R2 begins with the consequences: Suzaku delivers Lelouch to the Emperor, and Lelouch returns to rebellion knowing exactly who stands behind the Lancelot.
