Light Rearranges the Notebooks Before He Gives Up His Memories
SPOILER!
Open →
Ownership Is Part of the Plan, Not Bookkeeping
Before surrendering his Kira memories, Light does not simply abandon a notebook and hope for the best. He rearranges which Shinigami is attached to which notebook and prepares the chain of possession that will keep Kira active after he no longer remembers being Kira.
Why it matters
Ownership Relinquishment & Memory Erasure only works as strategy because Light plans the notebook's future before removing his own knowledge of the plan. The object keeps moving even after the planner disappears from his own mind.

SPOILER!

Rem Dies · Light Recovers the Notebook
After
Rem kills L and Watari, she dies under the Shinigami rule against deliberately extending a human life. Light retrieves the Death Note left behind with her remains. From that point forward, he has access to a notebook the task force does not understand as part of Kira's private inventory.
Why it matters
Light's position after L is stronger than simply inheriting the title of L. He also has supernatural resources the investigators around him cannot fully account for.

Touch → Memory Recovery · Death → Ownership Returns
When Light touches the recovered notebook in the helicopter, his Kira memories return while he remains in contact with it. He then uses the hidden piece inside his watch to kill Higuchi. With Higuchi dead, ownership of the notebook passes back to Light and the restored memories stop being temporary.
What changed
The investigation thinks it has captured Kira's weapon. In the same moment, Kira quietly becomes its owner again. See
The Helicopter Memory Recovery & Higuchi's Death.
Higuchi Receives the Notebook Light Originally Used
SPOILER!
Open →
Yotsuba Kira · Temporary Owner
The notebook that reaches Kyosuke Higuchi is the same physical Death Note Light originally used as Kira. Higuchi does not know that he is holding a piece of somebody else's long plan. To him, the notebook is an opportunity to kill competitors and pursue Misa without consequence.
Why it matters
The Yotsuba Kira is temporary by design. Light needs another owner to keep Kira active, create evidence of an outside killer and eventually bring the notebook back within reach of the investigation.

SPOILER!
Open →
Sayu Exchange · Mafia Possession
The notebook originally stolen from Sidoh eventually becomes the price of Sayu Yagami's release. Mello's organization takes possession of it, moving a real Death Note completely outside the investigation Light is trying to control.
What changed
The notebook is no longer an object Light can position safely inside his own plan. Mello now has the weapon, its rules and the ability to test what the task force knows about it.
