Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid · Primary Protagonist / Mithril Sergeant and Arbalest Pilot

The Second Raid begins with Sosuke trying to maintain the impossible balance he built in the first series: Mithril soldier, Jindai student and Kaname's hidden bodyguard all at once. That balance collapses when Mithril orders him to stop protecting Kaname and return to operations full time. Sosuke obeys, but the decision leaves him distracted, angry and increasingly unable to use the Arbalest's Lambda Driver properly. Clouseau's criticism hits because it exposes a problem Sosuke cannot solve with more training: he does not trust the machine, the order or himself. His disappearance also hurts Kaname in a way he failed to anticipate. The Hong Kong crisis forces Sosuke to decide what he is fighting for rather than simply waiting for another superior to define the mission.

OTO Melara "Boxer" 57mm Shotcannon

Conventional Arm Slave Firepower Open →
The Boxer is a 57mm shotcannon available to machines in the M9 and Arbalest family. It is exactly the kind of weapon that makes MITHRIL terrifying against ordinary Arm Slaves: large, direct and brutally practical.
Why it matters
The Second Raid keeps conventional weapons visible even after Lambda Drivers enter the fight. Against normal armor, a weapon like the Boxer matters immediately. Against a Lambda Driver barrier, throwing a larger conventional shell at the problem is no longer enough. That contrast is what makes Amalgam's Codarls feel genuinely disruptive rather than simply newer-looking machines.

Monomolecular Cutters

Close Combat Still Matters in a Lambda Driver War Open →
Monomolecular cutters are Arm Slave close-combat weapons designed to cut through armored opponents at ranges where rifles stop deciding the fight.
How you can tell
Clouseau's M9D Falke makes the point in Episode 8. He does not need a Lambda Driver to put the Arbalest in trouble. Positioning, timing and a pilot who trusts his machine are still enough to win a close fight.
Why it matters
The Second Raid never lets Black Technology completely replace ordinary combat skill. A Lambda Driver is an enormous advantage, but it does not automatically make its pilot better.

ECS (Electronic Concealment System)

Optical Camouflage · Electronic Concealment Open →
ECS allows advanced Arm Slaves such as MITHRIL's M9s and Arbalest to conceal themselves far more effectively than a conventional vehicle of their size should be able to.
How you can tell
The important thing is not that ECS makes a machine magically undetectable. It gives trained operators the ability to approach, observe and ambush from positions that should be impossible for an eight-meter combat machine.
Why it matters
The Second Raid increasingly pits forces with comparable advanced technology against each other. Stealth stops being MITHRIL's private trick and becomes another part of the tactical contest.

Al: The Arbalest's AI

The Machine Starts Talking Back Open →
Al is the artificial intelligence installed in the ARX-7 Arbalest. In The Second Raid, Al becomes important because Sousuke can no longer pretend the Arbalest is simply another piece of equipment that happens to behave badly.
How you can tell
By Episode 10, Sousuke is sitting inside the Arbalest talking directly to Al about why the machine will not respond the way he wants. Al's questions force him to describe problems he has been avoiding everywhere else.
What changed
The conflict stops being Sousuke versus a defective robot. The machine is working. Sousuke is the unstable part of the system.
Why it matters
That makes Al useful as more than cockpit software. The Arbalest becomes one of the few places where Sousuke cannot hide behind military procedure.

M9D Falke

Belfangan Clouseau's Close-Combat M9 Open →
The M9D Falke is Clouseau's specialized M9 variant. It does not carry a Lambda Driver, which is precisely why its Episode 8 duel with the Arbalest matters.
The Breakdown
Sousuke assumes that a machine capable of beating the Arbalest must possess some hidden technical advantage. Clouseau proves otherwise. He wins with a conventional M9-derived machine because he understands his own Arm Slave better than Sousuke understands the Arbalest.
Why it matters
The Falke destroys Sousuke's favorite excuse. He cannot keep blaming the Arbalest for every failed Lambda Driver activation once a machine without one beats him cleanly.
