TAKUMA KUGAYAMA SPOILER!
TK
Takuma Kugayama is a troubled young member of A21 whose ability to operate a Lambda Driver makes him essential to the group's plan. After Mithril takes him into custody, his unstable behavior and intense dependence on Seina quickly make it clear that he is not simply another captured terrorist. A21 needs Takuma to pilot the enormous Plan-1055 Behemoth, and Seina knows how to manipulate his need for her approval. Takuma turns the Behemoth crisis into something more disturbing than a simple weapons threat: a damaged teenager being used as the control system for a machine powerful enough to devastate a city.

SPOILER! A21 · Takuma Kugayama · Continuous Lambda Driver Open →The Plan-1051 Behemoth is so large that its most impressive weapon is not a cannon. It is the Lambda Driver keeping the machine standing. Without that continuous support, the Behemoth's own mass becomes its weakness.
How you can tell
Conventional attacks barely matter while Takuma keeps the Lambda Driver operating. Kaname and Tessa eventually realize that the same system making the Behemoth nearly untouchable is also doing the exhausting work of preventing the machine from collapsing under itself.
Why it worked
Sousuke does not defeat the Behemoth by overpowering it. He attacks the dependency holding the entire design together.
Why it matters
Episode 12 turns Black Technology into a design problem. The Behemoth looks impossible because it literally is impossible without the Lambda Driver constantly cheating the normal rules.
ARM SLAVES & LAMBDA DRIVER //
Open page →The Lambda Driver allows an Arm Slave pilot's mental focus to produce physical effects that ordinary weapons cannot explain. Gauron uses it defensively and offensively almost immediately. Takuma's Behemoth depends on one simply to remain functional. Sosuke has access to the same kind of technology in the Arbalest, but cannot reliably activate it at first.
The Breakdown
The important rule is not that anger equals power. Sosuke succeeds when his intention becomes specific enough for the machine to act on it. Kaname repeatedly helps him cross that gap.
Why it matters
The first series deliberately leaves the deeper science unexplained. The viewer knows what the Lambda Driver can do long before anyone can give a satisfying explanation of why such a machine should exist.

Open page →Episode 12 · Tokyo · A21's impossible Arm Slave
Takuma Kugayama activates A21's enormous Plan-1051 Behemoth and walks it into Tokyo behind a Lambda Driver powerful enough to shrug off conventional attacks.
The Breakdown
The Behemoth's size is also its flaw. Tessa and Kaname realize that the Lambda Driver is continuously supporting the machine's own impossible weight. Sousuke does not need the Arbalest to overpower a forty-meter monster in a straight contest. He needs to disrupt the system making that monster physically possible.
Why it matters
It is one of Full Metal Panic!'s best demonstrations that Black Technology does not erase engineering. The impossible machine still has a dependency, and understanding that dependency matters more than raw firepower.

The 2002 anime shows the threats before it explains the larger network Open →The original series gives MITHRIL several connected-looking problems without asking the viewer to memorize the later franchise's complete enemy hierarchy. Gauron has access to Lambda Driver-equipped Arm Slaves. A21 obtains the Behemoth. Advanced technology keeps appearing in the hands of people willing to use it violently.
What changed
The old version of this Lore treated Amalgam as a fully explained global organization and Gauron as one of its clearly defined commanders. That imports later Full Metal Panic! information into a season that does not present the enemy that cleanly.
Why it matters
For the 2002 anime, uncertainty is part of the threat. MITHRIL knows impossible weapons are spreading faster than they should. The viewer does not yet need the later-series organization chart.
