Nancy Makuhari, codenamed "Miss Deep," joins Yomiko as a British Library field agent during the I-jin investigation. Where Yomiko is distracted, excitable and completely incapable of looking like a conventional spy, Nancy is composed, confident and effortlessly professional. Her ability to pass through solid matter makes her an extraordinarily effective infiltrator.
The partnership becomes the emotional center of the OVA because Nancy is hiding something much larger than another intelligence affiliation. She is herself an I-jin, created from Mata Hari, and Ikkyu has another Nancy working beside him. The betrayal works because Yomiko never responds to Nancy as an intelligence problem. Even after everything points toward treachery, her first instinct is still to find her. That loyalty is what carries Yomiko through the final episode.
Two Mata Hari I-jin · One Small Difference
Nancy Makuhari is an I-jin derived from Mata Hari, but she is not the only one. Ikkyu has two physically identical Nancys in play, which is why the apparent betrayal and the fortress confrontation are so difficult for Yomiko, Ikkyu and the viewer to untangle.
The small physical tell is handedness. When the two Nancys finally fight, the survivor is able to exploit that difference by deliberately using the opposite hand and allowing Ikkyu to believe the wrong woman won.

The clone reveal is not there just to produce a surprise second Nancy. It lets the OVA turn identity itself into the final piece of espionage. Ikkyu created an almost perfect duplicate and then dies because he believes he can tell which one belongs to him.

The stolen books, reconstructed historical figures and I-jin fortress all converge on one plan. Ikkyu intends to launch Ludwig van Beethoven aboard a rocket and have him perform the completed Death Symphony from high altitude, allowing the music to be transmitted across the world.

Ikkyu's scheme gives the OVA a wonderfully R.O.D version of an apocalypse. The final weapon is not a bomb. It is a resurrected composer, a lost piece of music and enough technology to make the entire world listen.

Otto Lilienthal steals Yomiko's book during the Library of Congress investigation and escapes using the mechanical glider built around his identity as an aviation pioneer.

Yomiko refuses to let the sky end the pursuit. She constructs an enormous aircraft from paper and takes off after him with Nancy, turning what began as a book theft into a full aerial chase.
They finally bring Otto down by attaching paper to his glider and sending him into the Statue of Liberty.

This is where Yomiko's ability stops looking like a single combat trick. Paper is not just something she can sharpen or hide behind. If the situation requires an airplane, she makes an airplane.

Episode 2 · India · Nancy Goes Down, Yomiko Stops Holding Back
Genjo Sanzo confronts Yomiko and Nancy in India while the I-jin continue moving the material needed for Ikkyu's plan. His extendable staff, fire and cloud-riding abilities give Yomiko a very different opponent from the mechanical Fabre and Otto.

Sanzo seriously wounds Nancy during the confrontation. Yomiko's response is immediate. She unleashes an enormous storm of index cards against him, overwhelming the I-jin who had just put her partner down.
Sanzo survives long enough for the stolen book to continue moving through the I-jin operation, but the fight itself is over.

This is one of the first times the OVA shows what happens when Yomiko's emotional attachment to another person becomes stronger than her usual distracted gentleness. Nancy being hurt changes the way Yomiko fights.

Joker directs the organization from London while agents such as Yomiko Readman, Nancy Makuhari and Drake Anderson are sent into the field when a manuscript becomes dangerous enough to justify espionage, military support or both.
R.O.D never acts embarrassed by the premise. A stolen book can trigger the same response another spy story would reserve for a stolen weapon, and the agents pursuing it may include a woman who controls paper and another who walks through walls.
