The original Full Metal Panic balanced its military thriller against high school comedy with a precision that should not have worked and did. The Second Raid removes the balance. The comedy is almost entirely gone. What remains is the military thriller, and something underneath it that the first series was too busy juggling tones to fully surface.

Produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto, The Second Raid aired on TBS in 2005. Thirteen episodes. KyoAni were not yet the studio everyone knew them as, this predates Haruhi, predates Lucky Star, predates the reputation. What it represents is the studio at the peak of their action animation capability, before they pivoted to the aesthetic that would define their next decade. The Arm Slave combat sequences are as good as the genre produced in the mid-2000s.

The story picks up with the Amalgam organization moving from background threat to primary antagonist. Sousuke Sagara continues his impossible double life, MITHRIL special forces operative and Kaname Chidori's bodyguard-slash-classmate, until MITHRIL pulls him off the protection detail. What follows is the series' actual subject: what happens to a soldier trained since childhood for violence and nothing else when the one assignment that gave his life adjacent-to-human context is removed. Sousuke does not handle it gracefully. Sousuke does not handle it at all.

Gates is the antagonist the series deploys against this. Unhinged in a register the franchise had not previously attempted, not calculating, not ideological, simply a man who has found war and found that he likes it, enthusiastically, in a way that makes everyone around him deeply uncomfortable including his own allies. He is one of the more genuinely unsettling villain performances of the era.

Kaname alone and aware she is unprotected. Al, the Lambda Driver AI in the Arbalest, developing something that functions like concern. Tessa Testarossa carrying command weight that the first series kept at the level of character detail. The Second Raid is not a larger story than its predecessor. It is a narrower one, focused tighter on what the original was too busy to examine. Thirteen episodes and it earns every one of them.

A one-episode OVA, The Second Raid: "Another", was released with the DVD. Kaname in the bath, framed as comedy, functioning as something considerably more uncomfortable. Watch it after the series.

Sosuke Sagara

The Second Raid begins with Sosuke trying to maintain the impossible balance he built in the first series: Mithril soldier, Jindai student and Kaname's hidden bodyguard all at once. That balance collapses when Mithril orders him to stop protecting Kaname and return to operations full time. Sosuke obeys, but the decision leaves him distracted, angry and increasingly unable to use the Arbalest's Lambda Driver properly. Clouseau's criticism hits because it exposes a problem Sosuke cannot solve with more training: he does not trust the machine, the order or himself. His disappearance also hurts Kaname in a way he failed to anticipate. The Hong Kong crisis forces Sosuke to decide what he is fighting for rather than simply waiting for another superior to define the mission.

When Mithril abruptly removes him from the assignment, she is left with an unseen agent named Wraith and no explanation for why Sosuke vanished. Instead of accepting that isolation, Kaname notices the surveillance around her, confronts Wraith and then survives Xia Yu Lan's attempt to kill her largely through nerve and improvisation. The experience makes her fear real without making her helpless. Leonard Testarossa's appearance also introduces a new threat tied directly to her status as a Whispered. Kaname's anger at Sosuke comes from more than romance. She trusted him to tell her when the rules changed, and his silence makes the military world around him feel more dangerous than ever.

Mao can be blunt with Sosuke because she knows what he is capable of when focused, which also means she notices how badly the recall from Kaname is affecting him. She does not have Tessa's authority or Kaname's emotional place in his life, but she occupies a valuable middle ground: teammate, senior soldier and friend. When the organization begins cracking under pressure, Mao is one of the people still trying to keep the unit itself intact.

Belfangan Clouseau joins Mithril's Special Response Team as its new commander and immediately becomes one of the few pilots willing to challenge Sosuke directly. In a training match, Clouseau defeats the Arbalest with his M9D Falke even though Sosuke has access to the Lambda Driver. The lesson is not that the Arbalest is weak. It is that Sosuke's distrust of the machine is preventing him from using what it can actually do. Gates is an Amalgam officer created for The Second Raid and one of the series' most openly unstable villains. Gates is capable of reading a battlefield, recognizing Mithril tactics and using civilians or local conflicts as cover for Amalgam operations. Leonard Testarossa is Tessa's twin brother, a Whispered prodigy and a senior figure within Amalgam. He enters Kaname's life directly after Xia Yu Lan's failed attack, arriving with miniature Alastor machines and demonstrating that he can reach her even after she has outmaneuvered her immediate pursuer. Leonard is calm, polite and unsettlingly certain of his own position, a very different kind of threat from Gates or Gauron. His connection to Tessa also makes Amalgam personal for Mithril in a way an anonymous rival organization would not be.

Xia Yu Lan is one of the twin sisters trained under Gauron and used as assassins during the crisis surrounding Amalgam. She is sent to Tokyo after Sosuke has been removed from Kaname's protection, turning what looked like a quiet surveillance assignment into a direct attempt on Kaname's life. Yu Lan is fast, disciplined and frighteningly willing to kill at close range, but Kaname's refusal to panic lets the supposedly protected civilian turn the pursuit against her. Wraith is wounded, Kaname escapes and Yu Lan is eventually confronted by Leonard Testarossa's Alastor machines. Her death makes clear that the sisters are not simply loyal Amalgam operatives. They are following the legacy of their own teacher and have become expendable to the organization around them.

He knows exactly where Sosuke is emotionally weakest and uses Kaname's absence, the military recall and Sosuke's uncertainty about the Arbalest to make him question whether anything in his life can be trusted. Gauron's physical condition means the meeting cannot become the kind of battle they once had. Instead, his last weapon is information and cruelty, an attempt to leave Sosuke psychologically broken even after Gauron himself is gone.

Al's relationship with Sosuke becomes central in The Second Raid because the Arbalest's Lambda Driver only works when the pilot can align intent, confidence and imagination strongly enough to use it. Sosuke blames the machine whenever that connection fails, while Al keeps asking questions that sound increasingly less like diagnostic software and more like a partner trying to understand him. Clouseau's training match exposes the problem clearly: Sosuke does not trust the Arbalest, and therefore does not trust Al either. After the crisis with Kaname and Gauron forces Sosuke to reconsider what he wants, he finally stops treating the machine as defective equipment. The change is visible immediately. Al responds, the Lambda Driver works and the Arbalest becomes an extension of Sosuke rather than something he is fighting against.
