Marlene Angel is one of the soldiers sent to Earth to recover the cryogenically frozen Sleepers. The Blue killed her parents when she was a child, and Second Earth turned that loss into a life built around training, obedience and the belief that sentiment gets people killed. She initially treats Yuji as a mission objective whose survival matters because command says it does. Traveling with him across the ruined Earth gradually changes that. Yuji's fear, anger and refusal to accept Second Earth's cold calculations force Marlene to confront emotions she has spent years suppressing. When Yuji later begins losing himself inside the Sleeper program, their roles reverse and Marlene becomes the person fighting to preserve the humanity in him. Their relationship ultimately becomes the emotional center of the series.

While trekking across ruined terrain on foot, Yuji and Marlene were trapped inside a collapsing tunnel by a massive burrowing BLUE worm variant.
The Breakdown
Standard small-arms fire bounced off its segmented armor. Marlene baited the creature into a narrow choke point, allowing Yuji to wedge a high-explosive charge directly into its open mouth joint, collapsing the tunnel on the monster.

Second Earth attempted to wipe out all life on Earth with a orbital energy weapon after losing control of the Sleepers.
The Breakdown
Yuji integrated his awakened B-cell energy with the planet's consciousness, neutralizing Second Earth's orbital strike. Disarming the station, Yuji and Marlene returned to Earth's surface to rebuild human civilization in harmony with the planet.
