Dice Quaid is a former Second Earth soldier who abandons the military and chooses to survive on the ruined planet instead. Yuji and Marlene encounter him in the Mongolian wilderness, where his rough humor and open contempt for military thinking immediately clash with Marlene's training. Dice knows how to live outside the protected systems of Second Earth, and he has settled into the dangerous freedom of a world most people have already written off. He helps Yuji and Marlene continue toward the Baikonur space base and becomes one of the first people to show Yuji that surviving on Earth does not have to mean becoming emotionally numb. Beneath the boasting and arguments, Dice is practical, loyal and considerably more generous than he first appears.
