ALEXANDER ANDERSON

Alexander Anderson
AA

Hellsing · Antagonist

Paladin of Section XIII Iscariot, the Vatican's own monster-hunting division. Scottish Catholic priest. Regenerates from wounds that would end anything else. Fights with bayonets consecrated with Scripture and approaches Alucard as both a theological obligation and a personal challenge he has been waiting for. Anderson is not evil and Hellsing does not try to make him evil. He is a true believer operating with complete conviction in a cause he has given everything to, and the show respects that enough to make him genuinely dangerous. His confrontations with Alucard are the series at its best: two things that cannot really be killed finding each other and not walking away clean.

Episodes 3 & 7 · Alexander Anderson Open →
The Vatican's Section XIII Iscariot is Hellsing's Catholic counterpart and rival, introduced through Alexander Anderson rather than through a giant later-franchise war. In the 2001 series, the conflict is personal and institutional: both organizations hunt monsters, both believe they have divine or national authority to do it, and neither accepts the other's methods. Anderson makes that rivalry physical every time he meets Alucard.

Episode 3 · Sword Dancer · Iscariot Arrives

The FREAK-chip case brings Seras and a Hellsing team into contact with Alexander Anderson, a Vatican paladin who treats both artificial vampires and Hellsing's own undead operative as targets. Anderson tears through the Hellsing squad, incapacitates Seras and then meets Alucard. The point is not a clean winner. It is the arrival of an opponent who can hurt Alucard, regenerate from catastrophic damage and enjoy the confrontation almost as much as he does.
