Details & Synopsis
The Hellsing Organisation exists to protect England from the things that go bump in the night. Vampires. Ghouls. The undead in all their configurations. Its secret weapon is Alucard, an ancient, almost incomprehensibly powerful vampire who works for Hellsing because he chooses to, and who destroys monsters with a casual, aristocratic brutality that suggests he finds the whole business mildly entertaining. When a young police officer named Seras Victoria is turned during a mission gone wrong, she becomes his fledgling, and begins navigating a world she was never supposed to know existed.

Produced by Gonzo and directed by Umanosuke Iida, Hellsing aired on Fuji TV in 2001. Thirteen episodes that diverged significantly from Kouta Hirano's manga, the source material was still running and the anime outpaced it, charting its own course into original territory. This is not the Hellsing of Hellsing Ultimate. It is quieter, more gothic, more atmospheric. Where Ultimate is a war epic, the original is a horror series with political teeth.

The English dub by Pioneer is exceptional, Crispin Freeman as Alucard set a standard for vampire voice acting that the genre has been chasing ever since. This was an Adult Swim staple in the early 2000s. A gateway show for an entire generation of fans who thought they did not like horror.

Thirteen episodes. No filler. Pure gothic atmosphere from the first frame to the last.

Cheddar Village, England. A rogue vampire priest has turned the entire population into ghouls. D-11 police officer Seras Victoria is the last survivor. Alucard arrives and makes her a proposition no one should have to answer: do you want to live? She says yes. He shoots through her body to destroy the vampire, and she wakes up as his fledgling - no longer human, belonging to no category she has words for. The series establishes its register in the opening episode: gothic, merciless, and oddly beautiful. Seras Victoria is the audience's way in. Alucard is everything the audience is not supposed to understand yet.

Seras adjusts to her existence as a Hellsing operative: she is not fully vampire, not fully human, not fully either, carrying a gun that should feel familiar and a body that no longer operates by rules she learned. The episode tests her limits. She passes. The show is interested in what it costs to be what Seras is becoming and does not rush the answer.

FREAK chips - computer components capable of turning humans into artificial vampires - appear in the case files. The Vatican's Section XIII Iscariot makes its entrance in the form of Father Alexander Anderson: a priest, a paladin, a man who regenerates from wounds that should be fatal by deploying bayonets from seemingly nowhere at speed that puts him on Alucard's level. Alucard and Anderson fight to what functions as a draw. The show's second great character has arrived and the show knows it. The Hellsing and Iscariot organizations hate each other almost as much as they hate the undead. Almost.

Luke Valentine - elegant, fast, the kind of confident that comes from having fought a lot of things and won - heads for the upper floors and whoever is important enough to be worth the personal visit. Seras and the surviving Hellsing commandos fight Jan's ghouls below. Alucard waits above for Luke. The show's best action arc begins with this episode and it has chosen its opponents well.

Luke Valentine faces Alucard and learns what it means to encounter the real thing. He was the fastest, strongest vampire he had ever met. He had not met Alucard before. The Valentine Brothers are destroyed. The building is still standing. The price of the attack is counted in funerals.

Integra attends the funeral of Hellsing commandos who did not survive the Valentine attack. Then Alucard and Anderson have their full duel - pistols against bayonets, Alucard's regeneration against Anderson's regeneration, two beings who cannot be killed by anything the other possesses fighting with total commitment to the point. It ends not in victory but in interruption - both called off by their respective organizations simultaneously. The duel is the show's centerpiece action sequence and it earns the position. Crispin Freeman's Alucard in this episode is the reason the English dub became the definitive version for an entire generation.

The title is accurate. Reality bends and the show lets you feel it bend without explaining it cleanly.

The most powerful weapon the Hellsing Organization has, which is to say the most powerful vampire in existence, which is to say something that has been accumulating power for centuries and can release it in ways the show deploys with full theatrical commitment. Red coat, round tinted glasses, guns that have no right to be that large. Bound to the Hellsing family by an ancient oath and apparently content with that arrangement, or at least performing contentment convincingly enough that nobody has tested what happens if it lapses. Alucard fights with the enthusiasm of something that has been waiting a very long time for opponents worth the effort. Most enemies do not clear that bar. A few do. Those are the interesting episodes.

Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing. Head of the Royal Protestant Knights and the Hellsing Organization. Commands Alucard. Aristocratic, iron-spined, runs an extralegal vampire hunting operation with the composure of someone raised specifically to do this. Lights cigars in crisis situations. The show establishes her authority over Alucard in the first episode and never backs down from it, which is exactly the correct decision. She is not the most powerful person in the room in any physical sense and she does not need to be.

The audience entry point into a world where everything is already established and operating at full gothic horror. Reluctant to drink blood. Carries an anti-tank cannon. The show tracks her adjustment to being a creature of the night with more genuine care than the aesthetic suggests it will bother with, and that care is what makes her work as a character rather than just a contrast to Alucard.

Old, immaculate, and dangerous in ways that do not announce themselves until the moment they need to. The restraint is the point.

Paladin of Section XIII Iscariot, the Vatican's own monster-hunting division. Scottish Catholic priest. Regenerates from wounds that would end anything else. Fights with bayonets consecrated with Scripture and approaches Alucard as both a theological obligation and a personal challenge he has been waiting for. Anderson is not evil and Hellsing does not try to make him evil. He is a true believer operating with complete conviction in a cause he has given everything to, and the show respects that enough to make him genuinely dangerous. His confrontations with Alucard are the series at its best: two things that cannot really be killed finding each other and not walking away clean.

The original anime's final antagonist. An ancient vampire connected to a ritual the 13-episode series builds toward in its back half. Incognito is the original Hellsing's own creation, the direction the show takes when it diverges from the manga to find its own ending. The confrontation with Alucard that closes the series is constructed for maximum spectacle and delivers on it. He exists to give the finale the scale it needs.

Seras does not begin Hellsing as a vampire hunter looking for supernatural power. She begins as a police officer whose unit is destroyed around her. When Alucard tells her that killing the priest holding her will also kill her, he gives her the choice plainly. Seras chooses life. Everything that follows comes from the uncomfortable fact that the life she chose no longer fits the definition she had before that night.

Seras repeatedly resists drinking blood because accepting it would mean admitting that the transformation is not temporary. The refusal is impractical, sometimes dangerous and completely human. Hellsing does not rush her into Alucard's certainty. The early episodes let her keep asking whether she can do the work, use the strength and still remain recognizably the woman who entered Cheddar as a police officer.

The attack on Hellsing headquarters removes the possibility that Seras can remain a visitor in this world. She is one of the people left standing when Hellsing has to rebuild.

Whole-Series Character Logic

The important thing about Seras in this adaptation is that becoming a vampire does not erase the awkwardness, conscience or ordinary emotional reactions that made her human. She becomes stronger and more capable without becoming a smaller imitation of Alucard. By the finale she can stand inside Hellsing's war without needing to pretend she experiences it the way he does.
